This is a map of the dowery granted to my ggg-granmother, Obedience Bradshaw Lawing, after the death of her husband, Andrew. This property was part of Andrew's extensive landing holdings along the Catawba River in western Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. Much of the land remained in the family for generations. Now almost all of it is developed, part of Charlotte's suburban sprawl. Sad.

Up is west, not north.

Wonderful card Pip thank You for sharing

Wonderful piece of history there Pip!  Have you visited that exact tract?

Wouldn't it have been nice if they just rented the land all these years and handed it down to you wink

If each of my ancestors just saved a nickle I'd be a rich man!

SJ, if all my direct ancestors’ lands,  by some miracle, got handed down to me, I’d own all the land on both sides of the Catawba from Lake Norman to Lake Wylie!  Add to that several hundreds of acres in Macon County, North Carolina.
Wonderful map. Thank you for sharing, Pip.

This is a public domain map of the Shawnee Cattle Trail, on the right, which was the first route that the longhorn cattle were taken north. Texas herds were taken along this Indian trail as early as 1840. My home sits on this trail--east of Muskogee, Oklahoma and by the Arkansas River where they had watered the cattle and horses. This is not my house, but it is also a photo taken from my back porch of the berm back of my house that had two rows of very rusty old barbed wire where the farmers had kept the cattle out of their property.

Wonderful map and photo!  Thanks for sharing.
Thank you Susan.
Thank you SJ.
I love this map Alexis.  Love it because my dad was from Shawneetown, although it may have nothing to do with the map.
Thank you Cheryl, your dad’s town must have gotten the name from the Shawnee Indians. I like the idea that my yard used to look like something from a John Wayne movie, but my 97 year old next door neighbor says that that is why we have so many weeds. She says that they threw down seeds from Europe that would grow fast for the cattle to eat.

Alexis, you are so right. There was an old Shawneetown in Illinois. The village was devastated by the Ohio River flood of 1937 and the population was moved several miles inland to New Shawneetown. At least one record suggests that a village was established there in 1748. It was a little town but did have some historic value. Lewis and Clark went through there, and the first bank chartered in Illinois in 1816 was in Shawneetown.

My 4x great grandfather Jacob Short was a road surveyor in Botetourt County, Virginia and he surveyed and drew this map of his property in the late 1790s.

by Caryl Ruckert G2G6 Pilot (205k points)
Caryl, this is certainly a treasure to have this actually done by your 4x great grandfather. Thank you for sharing his work. You certainly have the perfect answer to this question.
That is wonderful.  Where did you find it and who has the original?
It is from the deed books of Botetourt.  A cousin sent me the photos of the records (including this map!).
Thank You Caryl for sharing this wonderful cart with writing
How exciting that you have a map that was drawn by your own ancestor. Thank you for sharing.

I was so happy the first time I saw this map.  It is the neighborhood map for the Nottingham Lots in Maryland.  My ancestor John Beals is listed as one of the residents and you can see his little slice of land in the neighborhood.  John came over with many of the Quakers in the late 17th century.  Some of the other names in this neighborhood are also listed in the manifests of the William Penn Fleet.

by SJ Baty G2G Astronaut (1.2m points)
Awesome map!  Joel Baily is one of my G+ great grandfathers and I love seeing his lot on the map.  Thanks for sharing this cousin.
How funny, we're cousins in one line and neighbor ancestors in another!
Love our Quaker/PA roots!
This is awesome SJ thank You for sharing this great cart

The map was uploaded in 2017 by Roger Bales, who wrote:

This photo of the layout of Nottingham Lots (mentioned in John I genealogy came from the "Bales Family Records", contained in EARLY SETTLERS OF LEE COUNTY, VA. AND ADJACENT COUNTIES, Vol 2, compiled by Hattie Byrd Muncy Bales, Media Inc., Publishers, Greensboro, NC, 1977

The map is oriented with west at the top.  The division between West Nottingham and East Nottingham is around Lot 14.  The Nottingham Lots were settled about 1702.

I love this map. The way the little houses are all lined up. It is perfect and you are lucky to have it.

Thank you for sharing.
It looks like little houses all lined up, but each lot was around 500 acres.

This is a plat map of Noble Township, Noble co., Indiana from 1874. My maternal grandfather's parents were both born in this area, and many of the parcels on the map belong to people related to me.

500px-52_Photos_Week_50_Map.jpg

Parcels owned by people that I know are relatives, I outlined with colors, using different colors for different family names. They are not all direct ancestors, some are brothers or sisters of direct ancestors.

I prepared this map when I was typing up a portion of my great-great grandfather's (Peter Winebrenner's) diary, written while my great-grandmother had come home from Kansas for a visit. He took her around to visit relatives. However, the diary gave the peoples' names, but didn't give the relationships, and he used the married names of female relatives. This visit was back in 1897, and my family's oral history that I was taught as a child did not include them, and I had no idea who they were. It took me months of research to find out that all these people that  they went to visit were all relatives, and what the relationships were. They included my great-grandmother's sisters and brothers, cousins, and 2nd cousins. She also visited some of her husband's relatives, though he did not accompany her on the trip. Anyway, I used it as an illustration, to help my brother and cousins and their kids understand who these people were, and where they lived.

When I saw this prompt, I thought of my great-grandfather, Lars Eriksson.  I have one picture of him, which is a family photo taken around 1915.  Map came to mind thanks to the reminiscences of his daughter Hildur (leftmost in the picture).  Lars, an ardent patriot, monitored troop movements during World War One by placing pins on a large map set up in the house.

What a lovely photo.
What a beautiful family. How diligent he was to monitor the troops movement on a map.

I searched for ages to find a map which showed Wickham, on the Burdekin River. After Wickham was practically washed away three times in floods, the town of Ayr was surveyed in 1882.

Hi everyone, this is a quilt my grandma, Gladys (Goodman) Dettmer made depicting the farm that she and her husband Les Dettmer ran and where my mom grew up. My grandma loves quilting and as you can see is talented at it. She made this one using a photo taken of the farm from an airplane.

by Erin Johnson G2G6 Mach 1 (14.6k points)
Now that is unique!
The triangle border is the Flying Geese pattern.
Thank you, S.J!
Thank you, Alison, you just taught me something new! :)
I am not a quilter, but my aunt was and I have friends that quilt. There are many very old patters, most with names, and many with meanings. Quilts were often used to convey messages on the Underground Railway, and flying geese showed the direction to go. I realize that your grandmother's quilt is not of that era, yet it can be interesting to know the history of the pattern. You can find out some about quilt patterns on the internet, but I think books cover more patterns than you can yet find online.
Such a unique map.  This should get best answer. No easy to quilt, but to quilt a map - Great job grandma.

Thank you for sharing.
Thank you so much, Cheryl! :)

My father's uncle, Vernon Claffey, was the town employee and garbageman from about 1938 to 1988 in Radville, Saskatchewan, Canada. A walkway was named after him in 1994. It's not on the MAP, but it should be.

Here's a map I just uploaded to Wikitree last week.

I worked out the location of the 1840 property belonging to my ancestors, Daniel and Hannah Davis, and then I mapped it out for myself. It's fascinating seeing their reality overlaid on the same map format I use every day to find convenience stores and coffee shops.

I've never visited the property, aside from clicking around with Google's street view feature. But someday I will.

My Great -Great Grandfather, John Franklin Sims, owned a farm near the township of Flat Branch, Shelby County, Illinois.  Below is a Land Plot Map of the area.  It show where is land was located.

by Bill Sims G2G6 Pilot (126k points)
My map above, of Daniel and Hannah Davis's property, is Shelby County too! They lived a little bit to the east, near Windsor.

Do you happen to remember where you found the plat map?
It was among my grandmothers stuff that I inherited ... I know several years ago she spent a lot of time in the Genealogy area of the Moweaqua Public Library.  so maybe there or in the Shelby County records in Shelbyville.
Thanks. I'd like to go to Shelbyville someday, but I haven't had a chance to yet.

Here is a map I found of the Town of Lunenburg, Nova Scotia dated 1879. The area encircled by trees at the upper left is the cemetery (much larger now) however if you look at the block to the right of the cemetery there is a church there. That is Zion Lutheran Church and the corner of the block where the front entrance is located was the house lot that my Great (x5) Grandfather Johann Wilhelm Gorkum received as one of the first settlers of the town in 1753 (after arriving in Halifax from Germany in 1752). I also have maps compiled by a late noted genealogist - Dr. J. Christopher Young - who I recently learned was actually a cousin of mine. They show approximately where Wilhelm's 30-acre farm property, and 300-acre woodland property that he was granted were located - quite some distance from town.

------------------------------

I had another cousin, Cassie Corkum who at age 24 married Israel Chesley, a local Lunenburg County farmer in 1911. These were ordinary people however within three months of their marriage, they moved most of the way across Canada to Saskatchewan and became homesteaders at the time when the government was opening up prairie lands for settlement. I found map coordinates of their property so it is easy to see on Google Maps by entering 51.536390, -104.848645 - the property is near Nokomis SK. They must have been quite adventurous to make that move so far from home at the beginning of their marriage.

This map is of a portion of the Encanto neighborhood in the city of San Diego, California that was at least partially developed by my husband's grandfather, William Arthur Shaules.  The streets that are marked in green are named after friends/family of William.  Shaules Avenue is obvious.  Sullivan Avenue was named for William's best friend but also one of his sons was named Patrick Russel Sullivan Shaules.  Pagel Place was named for a man who was a friend of William's in Montana and San Diego who also saved William's life at some time in Montana.  William had another son named William Abraham Pagel Shaules.  And finally, Patten Street was named for a colleague named William Lunt Patten who was also his father-in-law as he married Mr. Patten's daughter Cora Beulah Patten.

This photo shows part of the area on the map before real development began.  (I also used this photo in Week 17)

The final photo is of my husband, David, "holding up" the Shaules Avenue street sign in 2008.  The neighborhood is now densely populated, but has seen better days.

52 Photos Week 50: Map

500px-Hess-4075-6.jpg

This is an 1883 Map of Momence, Kankakee County, Illinois. On the map, I have outlined in green, land that my husband's 3rd great-grandfather owned. His 3rd great-grandfather was the 8th settler in Momence in 1839 and one of the original settlers.

Just last weekend one of my girlfriends ran across another Hess map that is dated July 24, 1923. The County Surveyor, L.C. Looker, surveyed H.J. Roovaart's Subdivision of Original Lot 7 of W.B. Hess' Subdivision. This was the map that I really wanted to show you today. However it was too big for my scanner. I am very fortunate to have this map. She purchased it at an estate sale and gifted it to me.

I am looking for a frame to place it in.
