Hi.

I can't find this person http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Knapp-906 on the 1891 England Census anywhere.

Thomas Knapp b 1864,East Woodhay.Hampshire,England.

In the 1881 he's at Albury,Surrey.

In the 1901 Census he's at Albury,Surrey.

But where was he in between?

I'm now looking through various military records for an explaination.

Also looking at court index's

I also know that transcription errors can make a name completely different from the true name of a person in many cases..

Any help with this one would be appreciated!

Thanks.

Steve.

Have you tried searching by address? Sometimes scrolling through the village can find him if he's been misindexed or mistranscribed. Albury isn't that big a place so it would be feasible I should think.

A belated thanks Julia!. I've not been in for a few days.  I'll do as you suggest and hopefully I'll find him. :)
I have just carefully looked through the 1891(Albury) Cen for Thomas Knapp.

Unfortunately he isn't anywhere to be seen,

I'll keep looking though. :)

Could this Thomas Eknapp be him?

This Thomas E Knapp is clearly indicated as a bricklayer in that census.

And hence it is unlikely he can be the Hampshire born Thomas,  who in later censuses is a carpenter.

Steve (my distant cousin) still has his quest before him.

When I have had a missing person in a census, they are usually found in some 'institution'  where the record /information provider had the birthplace,  birth-year,  or even forename incorrect.  And the individual had no opportunity to make a correction.
Thanks Maureen! I'll take a look at this on the original copy.
Thanks also to Anon!..lots of ideas to investigate there.
