CHANGE TO BEST ANSWER PROCESS:  After much discussion we have come to the conclusion that all answers in the Weekend Chat are of equal importance and weight.  So we are going to discontinue the Best Answer portion as it adds points and then takes them away from posters and is causing some hurt feelings.  So in the interest of everyone is equal and valued we will delete any best answers given which will deduct those points because it has been pointed out that to give everyone best answer is also not a viable option.

Weekend Chat is for everyone. It's a place to catch up on what people are up to and to share what you've been doing.  New members can say hello, introduce themselves, ask questions, and meet each other.  Our seasoned members can share progress or successes from their projects, give tips and advice, or chime in on hot topics.

Post as many answers and comments as you wish. It doesn't hurt anyone to post a lot and enjoy the multitude of topics.

Sorry for your loss Pip, You will be in my family's thoughts this weekend.
We are saddened by this news, Pip. Condolences to you and your extended family.
As always, thanks for hosting Pip.  You're family still in our prayers.
So sorry to hear of the loss of your mother.  Sending prayers!
My heart goes out to you and your family.  Loss is hard no matter if it is expected or not.  Sending cyber hugs to you and your family along with prayers and my deepest sympathies.
Sorry for your loss, Pip. We'll keep you and yours in our thoughts through the holidays.
My Deepest Sympathies go out to you, and yours, Pip.
So sorry to hear about your loss, Pip. You and your family will be in my thoughts and prayers.
Pip my friend, heartfelt condolences for the loss of your mother Betty. You and your family are in our thoughts and prayers.
I'm sad to hear of your loss. I too have lost both my parents. Unfortunately, I don't have the most comforting words. What eases the pain for me is to still celebrate birthdays with cards, cake, and a meal for them. As long as you find little ways to celebrate her life, even if it's just a moment spent looking at her favorite flower, or listening to a song she loved. For those few short moments, it will feel as if she is there with you.

Well normally my first post is that of a recipe, or some tempting food to feast your tastebuds on. but today it is a note of condolences and support for our dear friend Pip. I myself just went through a family member passing away during Thanksgiving causing it not to be so joyful in one respect but yet a time of family gatherings and remembrances. I pray Pip has traveling mercies and during his time of grief he experiences a nice coming together of family and friends to share memories and fondness of his mother. May these memories be uplifting and a reminder for all of us that we just never know when someone we love will no longer be here during these holidays so why wait for a family get together, a phone call, a text, or trip to spend some time together. My thoughts and prayers to Pip and his immediate family, and friends of Betty Underwood Berg!!!

We are equally saddened to hear of your own loss. Condolences to you and your extended family.
Condolences and prayers to you too Dorothy.
Dorothy you stay in my thoughts and prayers.
It certainly is disorienting to know what Pip is going through this weekend.   It's OK when he goes off for a weekend of bagpipes and games,  but we all suffer with him this weekend.

But back on the horse by Sunday Dorothy,  we look forward to the recipes.

Pip,

It seems she had an incredible life.    She certainly has an incredible son.   You experienced loss earlier this year and from what you've posted,  I'm  certain you knew to treasure the time you had with her and she understood the depth of your love.  Sorry  your family has to  experience her loss during the holidays.   You're always  "the inspirer"  and adding the positive and comforting spin,    so I my words will be certainly be pale in comparison.   My thoughts are with you and your wonderful family.   Time for double hugs.

Hails and horns, Wikipeeps.

First off: Condolences to our friend Pip. So sorry about your mom.  If you ever need to talk, I'm just a message away. Don't worry about not getting to ALL of our crazy comments. We know you care. Just take care of you. That's what matters.

Onto the rest!

On the genealogy front, I posted week 51: https://allroadhaverhill.blogspot.com/2019/12/52-ancestors-week-51-future.html

I had a lot of fun with this one as I outlined what I plan to do next year. Got some serious planning to do. What am I going to do here, though? Not sure. We shall see!

A lot of people seemed to like my logo. All it is is the Back to the Future font on a time vortex background I made for the comic ages ago. I used the font for a video where I went back in time.

Actually, I was reviewing a comic for every decade Marvel had been around. For the 1980s section, I used the font and a Back to the future theme. Here's the vid: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CnwNPCz_zgU

I think the editing came out a LITTLE better on the newer version. That's what happens when you work on stuff. You always find ways to improve old work.

Still, it was a decent blog post. =)

On the non genealogy front, we are exactly one week away from my birthday where I turn 29 for the 12th time. ;) That's going to be a fun weekend chat. =)

Yesterday we had our annual office Christmas party. My parents, the office staff and I went to a nice restaurant and had a good time. My only problem is that you had to order dessert twenty minutes in advance. Ah well. It was still good! Had ginger chicken tacos. =D

Checking out the reviews for Rise of Skywalker. I hope to see that soon. Perhaps for my birthday? We shall see. All shopping is done. All cards are sent. Not much else left to do but relax and probably help my parents shop for food.

Hope everyone has a great weekend! Pip, I am sorry for your loss.

by Chris Ferraiolo G2G6 Pilot (756k points)
I have a question, did you as a child or even now, feel you get slighted with Christmas and your birthday being so close?? I mean, how did your family do it, split up your presents between the two days, or did you get more gifts between the two days???? Curious minds wanta know lol!!
I never felt slighted. My parents tended to split the presents up between both days. It was never really a big deal. Christmas was usually where I'd get a BIG present.

Birthday parties were usually done after New Years' because with Christmas and New Years, people were partied out. Though, sometimes I'd have one on the 28th with family.
12 times turning 29? You should be a freakin pro at being 29. Are you going to get it right this time so you can finally turn 30?
Not if I can help it, Paul. =) Eh, maybe I will.

Well this weekend, (with only four days until Dec 25th),  a great many of us are heavily involved in getting ready for Christmas!! Shopping, looking for the best deals, hiding the gifts until they get wrapped, attending office Christmas parties, making traveling plans etc.

The traditional customs associated in various countries with "Christmas" have a mix of Christian and/or secular themes and origins.  Popular modern customs of the holiday include gift giving, competing an Advent calendar or wreath; having Christmas music and caroling, or viewing a Nativity play.  For many it is celebrated with an exchange of Christmas cards, attending church services or eating a special Christmas meal with family and friends.  Many families get together to decorate the Christmas tree, hang Christmas lights and/or wreaths, mistletoe and holly.

Either Christmas Eve or Christmas day, it is traditional for family members gather to open their presents and feast on a great meal. Share with us your Christmas activities and maybe a picture or two. Tell us if it is going to snow or just a normal winter day.

by Dorothy Barry G2G Astronaut (2.7m points)
Good doggo.....just before the presents are ripped open. =)

I'll start with a PRE-Christmas photo.   My niece and nephew,  Nora and Reid,   adopted from South Korea as babies.  (3 years apart)

Yes,  they've picked a tree to cut for Christmas.

Awesome photo, thanks for sharing Peggy!
Hi  i'm new here and would like to wish everyone a Happy Holiday, and a joyous New Year.

My Christmas tree was up way before Thanksgiving i'm ready for it to be over and done with, i will be cooking Christmas Eve so me and my family can have us a nice Holiday meal, and then open the few presents they have since  they are older 20 and 27 and i don't really have to try and please them to much haha :)

                               Happy Holidays!!

Merry Christmas to you too Ursula.   (I have one ancestor born in 1810 named Ursula...... she's certainly not as famous as Ursula Andress.   It's a great name.)

Welcome to WikiTree!   Glad you found the "WeekEnd Chat"  so early.

I'm cooking a lot today.....to make it easier on Christmas day.    My husband claims he's going to make brownies later day.surprise

On this day:

1521: The Siege of Rhodes ended with the victory of the Ottomans and the departure of the Order of Saint John on 1 Jan 1522.

1812: Grimm's Fairy Tales were published for the first time

1999: Macau was transferred to China after being a Portuguese colony since 1557.

Humm, the Grimm brothers must have has a great sense of humor and loved to write. Thanks for sharing "On This Day" Jelena!!
I don't know anymore which of Grimm's fairy tales that was about, but when my 1C2R was born, her grandmother started reading them. And once she asked mom if the ending is really that brutal as it is described in the Serbian version. Mum looked into the German version and said it is correctly translated....
Hansel and Gretel? Gretel roasted the witch.
Could be. Yeah, I remember we chatted about it being a really popular tale. Hänsel and Gretel is quite popular, isn't it? ;)

Dorothy, the Grimm brothers were actually linguists. While Martin Luther created the written German (some of the words he wrote for the first time in the German Bible are still used today, some of his sayings are still in use), the Grimm brothers created the first unilingual dictionary. It is digitized, and actually I happen to have used it several times when I looked for the meaning of some words in the late 1800s.
Jelena,

You're certainly packed full of interesting tales and facts..... Reading you posts certainly helps expand my interests.
Peggy, I turn to Wikipedia's "on this day" section every single time I sample them
Cinderella was pretty brutal too - the stepsister's feet didn't fit into the glass slipper when the prince came by, so they got out a knife and chopped off parts to help make it fit. I can't picture any prince that would have been impressed by such a display, but that was typical Grimm's.

We went out by bus today. It was raining and there was quite a wind, the bus shelter leaked and a puddle was developing at our feet, not a good start to a day out. The bus was late, it was still late 5 minutes later, queue was muttering. When it finally arrived it was driven by Father Christmas (Santa Claus or St Nicholas), decorated inside with miles of tinsel and some fairy lights. Mrs Christmas had come along for the ride with a big basket of sweets to chose from. Many leaving passengers were taking selfies before leaving: who cares that the bus was late? Made our day.

Well another year is almost gone, seems like the older we get the faster time flies. Haven't been on chat in awhile but wanted to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas. As for me, I am "Dreaming of a White Christmas!!"  Anyone else??

by Sandra Davidson G2G6 Pilot (188k points)
Not a chance. Hasn't snowed here worth talking about for ten years. That year hubby and grandsons got caught in 18 unexpected inches the night they were going to the ski school for their first lesson. Didn't get home until 3am having failed to reach ski school which was closed anyway because of SNOW. Don't expect to see any more in my lifetime.
I'll admit new fallen snow is beautiful (until it gets trodden on and dirty) and the way it muffles sound certainly has a strange effect.   But  I'll have to think about other attributes, since I'm past my days of creating snow men.   (oops.... should it be snow persons????)   Anyway,  hope you get your wish for a White Christmas.
We have snow now, but the weather is turning warmer and by Christmas it will only be a memory. I love a White Christmas, but it appears this year the only way I'm getting that will be to turn on the DVD and watch Bing and company get theirs.

WEATHERING ... not the "usual" autumn/winter weather I am accustomed to -- but the snowpack in the Sierra's is being touted as very helpful for our CA water supply ... tell THAT to the frozen fingered icy footed folk shoveling it out of their way up there ... I really really did not enjoy belly flopping on ice / snow to put the chains on the tires ... just did not enjoy that for 20+ yrs -- but down here in Sunny ?? California one long dry spell and then it decided to rain and rain and rain and now it is back to being dry dry dry ... our first winter down here it was fog and rain ... we USUALLY have more rain than this ... eh. Take what is given unto you and be grateful ...

GENEALOGICALLY I am still flailing away at "upping" the profiles I manage ... What's the famous quote that mountain climber left us as to why he climbed that mountain? "Because it was there." ... right. I'm thinking I'm "upping" because it's there to be "upped". 1,700+ and possibly growing list ... I'm feeling like I'm one of those kittens you see whirling around trying to capture its own tail ... I will not be defeated!! Rah rah.

After the dust in DC dies down and Nancy Pelosi retires (she will be 80 come March 2020) and probably good for another 15 yrs or more of life, and I got to wondering what her profile would look like ... FIRST female Speaker of the House of Representatives and that's probably only one of her Accomplishments ... 1st elected to Congress in 1987 and look at where she is now!!  1st woman to lead a political party.  She is already a Notable (appears in Wikipedia) and it should be interesting as a WT profile

Turns out to be an interesting idea -- also -- for a project anyway, the 54 elected Speaker of the House in 200+ yrs -- 32 of them had multiple terms as Speaker of the House ...

TOOK me awhile to figure out the Newest Change Chris W introduced ... ah HA! I finally said, it refers to those messages left on our own profile, to archive them ... yes? Or on any profile?? Apparently there are dozens of PM who have 100's ?? --  I don't know. It is not a phenomena I have to contend with. I'm not even convinced it is a necessary improvement, but since I don't have the "problem" I can't judge that

And all that message thingie was moved to the bottom of the page, which is okay with me ... I'm supposing the least used features of profiles WILL be shoved to the bottom ...

Hello,

Just finished my family chat that I have every Friday. My mother told me that my dad's first cousin died yesterday in New Zealand. So I have added that date to her profile and now she can be seen. I don't have any sources yet, but her death notice was published in the local paper. Mum will send me a copy of that later today.

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Thompson-50491

She and my dad used to be called Twin Cousins because they were both born in the same city on the same day and year. (1937).

So I have added a photo to both Mildred and Dad's profiles taken at their primary (elementary) school 150th jubilee back in 2015.

Condolences Pip.

Seems like a rainy year for us; rain again - so unusual for Spain.

FTDNA emailed at the end of last weekend that they rec'd my father's test kit.  So excited to see if one generation back can help expand the cousin base.

Started working on my paternal grandfather's profile to get it really top notch.  I'm starting a new ancestor audit but this time I'll be improving each generation's profiles as much as possible before moving to the older generation.  Working on the grandparents now, then to the greats, and then to the 2x great-grandparents.

The 52 Ancestors and 52 Photos challenges will be completing this coming Monday.  I really didn't think I'd be able to stick with both; I'm very happy to see that I'm not the only one who stuck with it.  The challenges will likely start again after January 1st; I recommend signing up if you want a nice place to chat with others about their ancestors and photos.

On the project side, I've added all of America's Founding Fathers to the American Revolutionary War Project (1776) with the exception of a few that are managed by the Presidents Project.  I hope to improve some of these profiles and to recruit some volunteers to help as well.

Hope you all have a great weekend.  I'm looking forward to reading everyone's replies.

by SJ Baty G2G Astronaut (1.2m points)
I audited my ancestors. My graph was taken from Greg Lavoie. Sorry, Greg!! Here. You can have my tickets to Rise of Skywalker.

Need to see that movie before the end of the year!!

Good work as usual!
SJ,

Your first sentence made me think of My Fair Lady  (probably dating myself) ... Hope the sun returns soon.

I'm certainly keeping an eye out for the beginning of  52 Photos in 2020...... I was  "out of action"  the first 5 months of 2019 but  hope to start at the beginning in 2020.   It's enjoyable seeing everyone's photos.

Howdy, SJ! It has been cool to cold here with a touch of rain today. I am also sending two DNA test kits I purchased in and will wait for the results. Looks like you have been busy with all your dong at Wikitree. Thank you for adding all of America's Founding Fathers to the American Revolutionary War project.

.

I also enjoyed doing the 52 ancestors. I doubt I will do it again next year though, as I already this year really needed to stretch some prompts to actually get a post.
Jelena, I doubt I'll do 52 of 52 weeks, but I plan to sign up for both and add some photos and ancestors here and there as I fancy & of course, to comment on the photos and ancestors of others who post.

@ David, thanks for the thanks ;-)

Greetings from Everett, Washington!

Pip's mother was a quilter. He said she had a masterpiece in the downstairs and no longer felt able to get up and down stairs to work on it.  Just a few weeks ago he found one of her missing blocks.  May God's grace be with you, Pip, as you go through the coming weeks.

Steady and saturating rain yesterday, today and tomorrow here in western Washington.

I backed the red Toyota into my husband's van and left a big dent in it and the taillight of the Toyota was broken.  This was when I was leaving home to pick up my son.  As we surveyed the damage our neighbor came out and said he heard it all.  The dent can be taken care of at the dealer; husband was advised to say it happened in a parking lot (car park) and he didn't witness it--which is technically true.  Huh? I guess this is so that it doesn't complicate the insurance situation?  I know so little of the ways of the world.

Well, last night we had Redguard Rice with ground lamb.  Wild rice and ground lamb, pretty good, and daughter liked it.  Son wouldn't touch it, as usual.

My son has jury duty starting Dec 26, or at least he is a prospective juror.  The last time he was called, he explained how difficult it is for him to retain details of subjects that don't interest him and he tends to nod off, as he has done in classrooms.

Our old Yorkie, Peppi, has decided to come and sit at my feet and face outward as if guarding me.  He senses when it's time to just be a presence and a comfort.  I would like to (virtually) just sit at Pip's feet and be a comfort.

Good morning,

First of all here again condolences to Pip and his family. Your mother seems to have had a life full of friends and family, quilts and church. May you all feel the support of the hugs and prayers that are coming your way now.

Weatherwise it is quite warm here in Central Europe, I'm actually thankful for that as you might know in the meanwhile. No snow in sight also in the next few days, we will not get a white Christmas.

On the family front, mum had her last physiotherapy before Christmas, but that's still not it for this year. Her surgeon didn't call back.... Oh well, the latest in the new year his secretary will get a visit again, that's for sure. We were this week on the "Christmas market" in the big town, I still bought a little present for mum and we are preparing for Christmas Eve with our social family. We are responsible for some small parts of the food this year. That's doable.

Genealogy-wise, I am still creating profiles for the extended family of Werner von Siemens. In the meanwhile I did more than 200 profiles for them, my watchlist will go down a good deal when I will have finished that project and kicked out all of them. I neglected Sourcing during that time, I have to do some of that still to keep my blue owl streak running this month.

Have a great weekend and a Merry Christmas all around!

69: Vespasian turns Roman Emperor

1880: The Isle of Man is the first political entity to give women the right to vote

1917: Heinrich Böll, Nobel Laureate in Literature, is born

by Jelena Eckstädt G2G Astronaut (1.4m points)
The Isle of Man is very intriguing!    I noticed only unmarried women were given the right to vote in 1880.     Hmmmm, most of the legislators voting for this change were probably married...... just seems odd.
And I had never realized that the Isle of Man is no part of the United Kingdom.

Several weeks of downtime was tedious! Thank you for the well wishes (even though you eventually got a response)

Found how fun it is to only have a smartphone to have access the internet/wikitree.

New first with the military research of my family, Australian records (George Simpson and his brother Adam. George was  Gallipoli KIA). While looking around for this information, I had found a few more members who passed away in Africa due one of the many conflicts over the years..  Although a few more notable figures may have been discovered (have to cross-reference first!).

Beginning to think that I should add another column to my roll of honour table for the nationality given the growing spread.

Currently awaiting a response from a Shelley following a query on information on a member of the family and wanting to compare our information (joint collab of mine and a cousin in the UK) with this persons information. It was unfortunate timing checking in with the UK cousin to check whether he could verify the request (he wasn't) only to find that his mother had passed away days before (a respectable life of 95!)

Can't help but think back to the Fabrins that I had resumed looking into (part of my Danish ancestry) and whether I should begin to look into the Italian front (excuse the pun, given that the first member of the family settled there after having severely wounded in action during the Napoleonic Wars)

Oh and a ton of project work now that my degree project is over...

Today is......

NATIONAL FRENCH FRIED SHRIMP DAY!

On December 21st, seafood lovers celebrate National French Fried Shrimp Day. Enjoyed all year long, this delicious dish delights many across the country.

Americans eat more shrimp than any other seafood.

The word prawn is used loosely to describe any large shrimp, sometimes known as jumbo shrimp. Some countries use the word prawn exclusively for all shrimp.

Preparing the shrimp for consumption usually involves the removal of the head, shell, tail and sand vein. There are many ways to cook shrimp. Common methods of preparation include baking, boiling, broiling, sauteing, frying and grilling.

Cooking time is delicate for shrimp and they are at their best when not over cooked.

A healthy food, shrimp is low in calories and high in levels of omega-3s, calcium, iodine, and protein. Shrimp is also known to be considered good for the circulatory system. *The preparation of the shrimp does impact the caloric count.

HOW TO OBSERVE French Fried Shrimp Day:

Enjoy one of the following recipes:

French Fried Shrimp
Fried Shrimp

by Dorothy Barry G2G Astronaut (2.7m points)
Sorry Dorothy, Yes for most Shrimp is thought to be a healthy food but I have an allergy to Shrimp and eating it in any way would not be good for my health, I would probably end up in the hospital so this one is going to be a very hard pass for me.

From the movie Forrest Gump:

Anyway, like I was sayin', shrimp is the fruit of the sea. You can barbecue it, boil it, broil it, bake it, saute it. Dey's uh, shrimp-kabobs, shrimp creole, shrimp gumbo. Pan fried, deep fried, stir-fried. There's pineapple shrimp, lemon shrimp, coconut shrimp, pepper shrimp, shrimp soup, shrimp stew, shrimp salad, shrimp and potatoes, shrimp burger, shrimp sandwich. That- that's about it.

Greetings and Salutations, WikiTreers!

Sad news to hear of Pip's Mom - I said it above, but I'll add it here too. My sympathies go out to him and his family.

It's been busy, busy, busy lately - but 'tis the season for such things. Lots of plans to make, family to see, events to go to, and shopping to do. I had my Elder ordination and immediately followed 2 days later by my first meeting with the group. Then emails and discussion the rest of the week. I guess the best way is to dive in headfirst. My wife had given me the impression we weren't going to do presents this year, then she casually mentioned needing time to wrap my presents... all I could hear was that Star Wars alien Admiral Ackbar... IT'S A TRAP! Guess I have my work cut out for me now.

From a genealogical standpoint, I found a few more Fulkersons to add in - up to Fulkerson-1940, but not a lot of hope to make my "2000" goal by end of year. Oh well, it won't disappoint me too much, but if I can at least get 10 more in I can call 1950 a success for now. I got sidetracked by a news story that touched my heart. A Korean War veteran passed away in nearby Elwood, Indiana, and the coroner there has been seeking family members and coming up short. He was buried Thursday with military honors, and when the word went out, 200 people showed up for his funeral. There were lots of genealogical details in his obituary, so I went out and created his profile the other day and was able to connect him to the big tree this morning.

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Green-34575

I'd still like to fill out more of his tree, so if anyone wants to help out, I'd be happy for any assistance. I did look for potential living relatives, but I'll admit that finding records of dead relatives is a whole lot easier than finding living ones. I had a few potential clues, but nothing that would clearly lead me to someone who could accept his burial flag, or would be anything other than a distant cousin and not know him from the guy down the street. It's sad when someone passes with no one to honor or remember them, so I just felt it would be nice to have them out there on the tree where they can always be found.

by Scott Fulkerson G2G Astronaut (1.5m points)
Now up to Fulkerson-1944!
Ah, Admiral Ackbar.

Did you see Rise of Skywalker, yet? I haven't! I hope to see it by or after my birthday.
Now at Fulkerson-1951!

I have now connected the two Fulkerson groups I was working on in Cole County, Missouri.  One of my amazing docents who worked for me when I was the director of the Cole County Historical Museum was Mildred Fromme Fulkerson, the wife of Frank Fulkerson, Fulkerson-1917.  I wanted to make sure she had a profile.  I will continue to work on this group.
Very nice! Greatly appreciated for all who have assisted with the Fulkerson profiles! Thank you!!
