Do you have a One Place Study? Or would you like to start one? [closed]

A one place study is a genealogical and historical study of a specific place, like a town, throughout its history. Aside from how helpful they can be in your personal genealogy, one place studies are a great contribution to the genealogical community, because by bringing together all the resources from a specific place, and perhaps transcribing records that have never been transcribed or put online before, you could be giving someone access to information about their ancestors that would have been very difficult for them to access otherwise.

I would like to start a project for people working on one place studies, sort of a parallel to the One Name Studies Project. Please reply here if you'd be interested in joining! Whether you've been working on a one place study for years, are just getting started, or have never heard of such a thing but want to learn more, we'd love to have you!

Update: This project has now been created! See Project:One Place Studies.

I have begun a One Place Study on [[Holland Marsh Dutch Settlers]] about Dutch immigrants who settled the vegetable basket rich black muck soil in Holland Marsh Ontario, Canada. Please add me to your list.
I now have 81 people populating the Holland Marsh, primarily during the 60s, however some of them are still there.
That looks like a really interesting focus of a One Place Study! I look forward to seeing what you do with it! :)
I now have about 275 names on my One Place Study of Holland Marsh Dutch Settlers in Ontario, Canada. It began in 1930 with about 17 original Dutch settlers and not surprisingly many of the 275 people I have recorded are related to one another. Interesting.
I think I have a couple already running informally. I just need the excuse to add lots more citizens and information. What next?

I do ! And would like to bring it here too !
by Maggie N. G2G Astronaut (1.3m points)

Great, Maggie! As soon as I get the project set up I'll add you to it. Where is your one place study? Mine's St. François Xavier, Manitoba.

I have been doing a One Place study ( before I even heard of such a thing as a One Place Study ) in a village that is now extinct in Hungary. It is a ghost- town but I have been collecting records, census, images, transcriptions about it for over 20 years.

I will email you details.
That is very cool, Maggie!

FYI, I've set up the project page, here: http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Project:One_Place_Studies

I would like to join. This sounds interesting.

I agree this sounds interesting, and might like to join.

Cool! Do either of you have a one place study started yet? Or do you have a place in mind you'd like to start a study of?

The project member badge isn't ready yet, but I have created the project page. So it would be great if you'd list yourselves under Current Participants, along with your place of interest if you've already chosen one.

I have never done or seen a one place study. I would like to start with Trenton, NJ, USA.
OK, I've added both of you to the list of participants and given you the project member badge.

Anne, I know you said you "might like" to join, but I added you just in case. :)
In for a penny, in for a pound. I'd like my place to be New Haven Colony. Is it ok to limit my place "in time" also since New Haven Colony ceases to exist in 1664?
For sure! In fact a place that only existed for a few decades is a pretty good choice for a one place study. Sometimes I wish I hadn't chosen a place that still exists and has been around for about 180 years! (Though I know that's nothing compared to some of those English one place studies!)

Thanks for letting me know! I will definitely join, and I've added a link to that website from our project page.

I have registered Holland Marsh Dutch Settlers from Ontario, Canada. I have assembled about 275 names.

Great to have you on-board Kerrie.

We now have 2,092 one-place study locations registered worldwide at oneplacestudy.org/world/

If any other one-place study genealogists would like to join us, registering is totally free and we can direct people to your one-place study wikitree page.

Thanks for setting this up, Lianne !

Here's my page :http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Derenk%2C_Hungary_One_Place_Study

I hope I did the Space page correctly (URL) . Should it be just the [placename] or the [placename] One Place Study in URL title ?

You're very welcome! :)

Well, we haven't yet come up with much in the way of standards for one place studies. But, I'm inclined to think that space page names don't really need to be standardised. My space page is titled with just the name of the place, because I created it a long time ago as a place to write the history of the place, add photos, etc. Both ways make a kind of sense.

QUESTION:

I see from the list of people who've joined the project that some use a Category page; others use a free Space page.

Under what conditions do we choose which one?

Thanks.

Jillaine for Schwenningen, Württemberg, Germany
by Jillaine Smith G2G6 Pilot (910k points)

Well, I would say that a category page is a must. As families are researched for a one place study, they should definitely be categorised in that place. So that category is going to be a pretty central place for a one place study.

I like to also have a space page to really get into the nitty gritty. I eventually want Space:St. François Xavier, Manitoba to have a decent history of the place, photos of landmarks, lots of source links, and more. That'll be more than could comfortably fit on a category page.

So, I think having both is good. :)

By the way, does this mean you're joining the project? I'd be happy to award you the project badge!

Nevermind, I see Maggie beat me to it. :)

grin ;-)

Okay, I'm not a heavy use of categories; would it be

Category:Schwenningen, Württemberg, Germany

?

Or should it be in the native language of the country:

Category:Schwenningen, Württemberg, Deutschland  ?
There is a Category:Deutschland

and in there is (among others)

Category:Baden-Württemberg%2C_Deutschland

So then, if I'm following the logic of this, the category for my one-place study would be

Category:Schwenningen, Baden-Württemberg, Deutschland

(even though at the time a lot of my Schwenningen families lived, it was just Württemberg)

As soon as someone confirms this, I'll get started.

Sorry I missed this before, Jillaine.

You can use either language, since we now have parallel category structures in multiple languages.

Unfortunately it looks like the standard category style for regional categories has not been applied for Germany in either language. Assuming the name is exactly the same in English and German, it should (I think, without knowing anything about German geography) be [[Category:Schwenningen, Württemberg]] for the German language category, and [[Category:Schwenningen, Württemberg (en)]] for the English language category.

Schwenningen is part of the city Villingen-Schwenningen since 1972. State is Baden-Württemberg, and for what it's worth, the official country name is Bundesrepublik Deutschland.

OK, so in that case, there will be multiple categories for different time frames, with the current one being [[Category:Villingen-Schwenningen, Baden-Württemberg]]. So Jillaine, which category/categories you use for your one place study will depend on how broad a time frame your study covers.

Dear me!

With apologies to the Bundesrepublik, I chose:

Category: Schwenningen, Baden-Württemberg, Deutschland

although technically, I should have left off "Baden-" because the timeframe I'm focused on was before the merger. But that's what I started using and I'm sticking with it.

I would like to set up a project for Fairfield County, South Carolina.  I have done extensive research on the area and have access to the local records.  I have requested a DNA project for the area at FTDNA.

Thanks, Nancy! I've awarded you the project badge and added you to the list of participants on the project page.

I have quite a lot of information and access to material on Oberlin, Ohio. Quite an interesting history. I am still working on putting my own tree on WikiTree so I don't know how quickly I'll get this Oberlin project going but I'll work on it as time permits.

This is not the current G2G thread-not sure why this one wasn't closed.  You can find the current one place studies G2G thread here.
