Has anybody else created a personal category like "To Orphan When Complete"?

I just created [[Category:Slade-590 To Orphan When Complete]] today. In fact, I was thinking about creating a Free-Space Profile with a name like "Free To A Good Home" when I realised that I could achieve the same goal through a personal category with a lot less maintenance.

As I was adding some content to it per Natalie's request, the thought occurred to me that there are probably other people who have created (or are thinking about creating) similar categories. Surely I'm not the only one whose watchlist needs to be pruned once in a while, so when I was still thinking in terms of a Free-Space profile, I was considering inviting other people to add their own profiles that they're planning to remove from their own watchlists once they've finished doing whatever they plan to do with them.

And now I'm wondering if this is a need that's felt widely enough that it would be worth adding [[Category:To Orphan When Complete]] (or some similar name) as a subcategory under [[Category:Maintenance Categories]].

I don't feel the need for such a category.  But that's just me.  I work through my Watchlist, sorting it by Edit Date.

I'm with Ros on this point we do not NEED one more category cluttering the area

Yes, Ros, but my idea for creating the category wasn't help me keep track of the profiles I intend to orphan once I've finished working on them, but rather to let other people who have an interest in one of those profiles that, "If you want it, you can have it."1

Here's the text I put into the category:

This category is for profiles that I manage, but plan to orphan once I have finished working on them. They may include:

  • Profiles that I have created for Notables in the news (or who capture my attention for some other reason), but have not fully sourced or been able to connect to the main tree.
  • Profiles that I have created in the process of trying to connect unconnected branches or notables to the main tree.
  • Profiles for relatives whom I have added in the course of building out my own family tree, but who are not my direct ancestors (cousins and in-laws of direct ancestors).
  • Profiles that I can't even remember why they're on my watchlist.

Generally speaking, I want to find at least three primary sources (birth, baptism, census, marriage, military, death, or burial record), and connect a profile to the main tree before I orphan it, because I don't want to leave a bunch of unfinished profiles lying around like litter. But if you have an interest in any of these people for any reason, you can go ahead and source them, connect them, or ask to manage them, as you prefer. Just let me know.

  1. As long as we all understand that managing a profile doesn't mean "owning" it.
Don't see the sense in creating such a category either, I have been going through my watchlist myself to unload some as  keep getting complaints from the program that I have too many there.  So I fill in basic bio with sources and send them on their merry way.

Anybody who has an interest in them won't go looking for a category for such, they will just go up their tree or search by name.

I also don't see the need for personal categories, but if they are useful for you, please follow the instructions in the Help Index.  https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Personal_Categories
