Would you like to start a Name Study for a surname in 2020?  Sign up below (answer, don't comment) and Ros will create the page for you and add you as the manager.  If you do not already have it, you will be awarded the One Name Studies Project Member badge.

I find myself so busy with the Fritz name study as I am including Fritz's from numerous countries, which takes considerably more time.  I am therefore, going to have to cancel my request for the Mayne study.  This will enable someone else to have it.  Then at sometime in the future I will be able to assist them.

Hi Ros; I have a Archie Lee Tubbs that I'm updating and I checked in Categories to see if there's a Tubbs Name Study and there is Tubbs Name Study so I can add the category but the sticker in the bio comes out red. Any ideas?

The Tubbs Name Study is currently non-operational; therefore, its sticker/category cannot be used.  It is available to adopt (see its categories), but you already have the maximum number of Name Studies, so you cannot take it on.

All that you were lacking is the category for One Name Studies (which puts you in the list).  I have added this back.

Please add wikitreeons@googlegroups.com as a manager.  This is so that I can rename the URL, which you cannot do, and is a requirement of the ONS Project. :)

You go to the Privacy tab on the Name Study's main page.
Scroll down until you see the dark green button 'Add This Person'.
Put  wikitreeons@googlegroups.com in there and click the button.  Do not click the email address.  You will see a banner at the top saying you have done this.
Scroll down again until you see the Trusted List.  On the right against the Project will be [Add as Manager].  Click this.
You're done!

Thanks Ros for suggesting a one name study for Whiting but my grandfather adopted the name upon the marriage of his mother (1877) to hide his illegitimacy. He was baptised as Pither (1876) and registered as Page (1871). Wwe suppose his real surname should have been Saxe-Coburg-Gotha as he was cared for by the Palace at Windsor. .

My NOEL family originally came from Canada.  They immigrated to New England in the 1850s and had a large family.

The NOEL name was anglicized to NEWELL by my 2nd great grandfather.

I thought I was a Wilson, but just recently learned (thanks to a lot of Weed DNA matches) that my Wilson grandfather was really a Weed (a long, traumatic story). I've already done so much Weed research (mostly on Ancestry.com where I have lots of DNA matches) that I would love to lead the Weed Name Study. I've always been told by those in our family and by Germans from Germany that the Kohls surname is it's own entity and not related to other spellings, including Kohl (like the store).  I can't say with 100% certainty that it is different from Koehl, but I'm certain Coles is of English origin, not German.

I had a ONS for my Caziah/Casiah family, (many spelling variants)  (see https://www.wikitree.com/index.php?title=Casiah-2&public=1) but a few months back we were told all ONS were suspended, and the profile tags went silent. 

I just went to the ONS list and found the Caziah ONS listed, with me as coordinator, but the tag doesn't show up on any profiles. Reading further on the ONS project page I see I may need to do some further work. Could you set me up please with the surname variants Caziah/Casiah/Kizziah and I'll work my way through the rest. I must admit to being a little confused by some of your post.  Who told you that ONSs were suspended? (to my knowledge, they never have been).

You are correct in that tags are not showing up on profiles: they won't show up unless you put them there ;)

One reason the tags on your Name Study are not showing up is that you need to put ONE surname per tag.  So your tag that starts Cashia, Cashie, Casie... will not work because there are 11 surnames in one tag.  So you will need to make three tags: Caziah, Casiah, and Kizziah, which will mean removing that long one and the one which I think is in Cyrillic script.

While you are at it, please move all that text from the category page

Category pages should have one or two brief sentences so you know where you are - and the categories themselves.  Something like:

"This is the companion category page for the [[Space:Trew Name Study|Trew Name Study]] and includes other spelling variations. To add this category to a profile, you can add the One Name Study sticker (which will add the category automatically)."

The rest should go either on its own separate freespace page (linked to the main Study page), or on the Study page itself.

Hi Ros,

I spent some time last night looking for the thread about the suspension of ONS or project pages, and couldn't find it. It caused a lot of contention at the time. ALL of my Caziahs, regardless of spelling, had tags to that point. I removed them but missed Dunning, though it does not work now, though previously it both showed up in his bio and served as a link to the ONS. As it says in the Bible, "If it were not so I would have told you." 

The reason there are so many spelling variants (I have recorded 46 so far) is that the name Kčę’heh, which means "my immediate family" comes directly from Skarù·rę’, the language of the Tuscarora Nation of North Carolina. There's no way to replicate it in English. The person writing it down just took a stab and did the best they could. Skarù·rę’ was the 1st language of my family until my generation. The characters are not Cyrillic, they are available on any English language keyboard, and they display perfectly well in profiles. See: https://www.wikitree.com/index.php?title=Cavel-5&public=1

I prefer to keep it as a variant because we are working hard to revive a dying language among our young and to interest our people in their own ancestry and history. But I will move it to a companion category page.

Regarding the variants: Even though you have identified 46 variants, there are only three spaces on the page for those green tags.  They link to the relevant genealogy pages.  Try clicking on them - the long one especially - and see where you are taken.  See how the one for the 11 names gets squished together into a huge long (nonexistent) name?

Regarding this 'suspension' - I still can't remember this situation.  The only thing I can think of was when project boxes versus stickers were hugely contentious - but that was three years ago, back in 2016:

Since then, I simply cannot think of something which caused a lot of contention - and I cannot think of a time at any time where ONSs were suspended...

You can reach the companion category page by clicking on the phrase 'Hulshizer Name Study' among the categories at the foot of the page. This is a list of all the profiles you include in your Study.

Your category will be [[Category:Hulshizer Name Study]]

and your sticker will be {{One Name Study|name=Hulshizer}}

and living members of your Study will be able to put {{Member|ONS|name=Hulshizer}} on their own profiles
