On the internet, connecting with wiki tree seems easy. Once in, I'm lost.

Hey Maria,

Welcome to WikiTree!  This big Ole Tree is growing and growing.  I can understand being lost once you are "in".  Since Mary answered your specific question, I will take on the being lost part.

I was lost when I first joined as well.  One thing I found useful was to Bookmark (in the browser) pages that I wanted to get back to easily.

Also spend some time learning the menu's at the top right of your page.  These drop down menu's give you access to everything from help, to creating those new profiles.

The "MyWikiTree" menu will give you information that is specific to you and the profiles you manage.  For example, click on Watchlist and it will show you a list of the profiles you are watching.

Paul Bech has put together some "How To" videos which are great!

If there are no profiles created for the two individuals above, create a profile for them which is very easy to do.  All you have to do is follow the form.  If there are profiles already, contact the profile managers and request to be put on the trusted list.

She may not know how to do all that.  Maybe have to tell her how to find a surname, then a profile, and then how to find the form, etc.  It is easier to those of us who have been here for awhile to follow your directions, but a newbie is completely lost on all the tech stuff.

I'm sorry, I didn't mention any techie stuff.  I'm not a programmer.  indecision  All I said was to see if there were profiles under those names, and if not, to create the profiles using the form that is included.  Would you have a suggestion on defining what a form is?  I'm sure it isn't that hard, even for a newbie to figure that one out.  There is also the welcome and confirming message a member gets from the greeter that has directions on getting accustomed to wikitree.  cool

Maria, on the top right hand corner, there is a "Find" button to click on.  You can look up a surname there to see if your ancestor is already listed ("has a profile").  Or maybe one of the parents or other ancestors already has a profile.  When looking for a specific person in a surname on a long list of profiles, you can sort the list out by birthdates to make it easier to find that person. (Where it says "Click on name to resort")

I looked up "Rochette" on the surname find, and there are a lot there already, but it doesn't look like any from 1765.  There may be many of the other surnames already there too.

Most of these are "open profiles", (a black and white open padlock is the symbol for open profile), meaning that, if you have something new to add to that profile, you can go up to "Edit" when you are on that profile and add it, including siblings, parents, spouse, etc.  Or you can click on "Send private message" to contact the profile manager (who looks after this specific profile) and suggest the addition or change.  This sends an email to the profile manager.

If these profiles are not part of your family, you can start adding your family.  Here are good directions:

There are many who can help if you get stuck.  You can click on the "help" button if needed, but also you should make use of the help the greeter here can give you.

Add WikiTree to your "favorites" list to find the page you want quickly next time.
