The profile for William Moon, father of William Mitchell Moon ( https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Moon-1829 ) lists his parents as Samuel and Martha (Routh) Moon.
I believe that William Mitchell's father is a different William Moon, son of John Moon. According to Find a Grave (https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/53164387), there is a William Robert Moon with those parents, but he moves to Ohio.
I'm new to Wikitree, so my question is what should I do? I have reached out to the profile owner but haven't received a response.
I base my belief on the land records and other documents in Sevier County TN, where Wm. Mitchell lives and dies. Here is the summary of our research.
The father of Wm Mitchell is William Moon (b ~1800 - d ~1841), who is likely the son of John Moon (b 1774 in PA - d ~1831). This can be deduced from the inheritance of the family land originally purchased by this William's grandfather William (1744-1822) on the East Fork of the Little Pigeon River in Sevier County.
William (1744-1822) has 385 acres surveyed in March 1807, and this land is granted to him in October 1808 as Tennessee State Land Grant No. 268 upon payment of the sum of $38.55. (Tennessee Land Grants, Book 1, page 268).
William (1744-1822) dies, and there is some disagreement between his sons John and Jonas about their father's estate. The issue (and satisfactory resolution) is recorded in the minutes of the Forks of the Little Pigeon Baptist Church in 1824-1825.
In 1827, John Moon acquires a 45 acre land grant in Sevier county TN, land adjoining the property owned by his father William Moon (1744-1822).
In 1837, John Moon's wife Susannah appears in the tax list as a property owner, so it seems John has passed away. William Moon (1800) also appears, though without any property.
Susannah passes away sometime after 1837, and William 1800 and his family appear in the 1840 census. However, soon after that, William dies and his widow Aseneth marries Tunis Scott.
Following the death of William 1800, there are a series of legal proceedings and land sales, as the widow and the heirs of William Moon sell or relinquish claim on the property. There is an indenture filed in 1846 that describes Asenath and Tunis Scott the selling of the property of "the deceased William Moon" to pay debts. There is also a quit claim deed from William Mitchell for the land owned by his father William Moon.
With this trail of inheritance, it seems pretty clear that William Moon (1800-1841) was the son of John Moon (1774-1831) and grandson of William Moon (1744-1822).
