I am interested in joining this project. My ancestor, Branch Flagg Ayres [Ayres-1946], enlisted with the 21st Massachusetts Infantry April 1861. The 21st was assigned to the Burnside Expedition to North Carolina. While enroute on the steamer "Northerner," he came down with typhoid fever. Fought at the battle of Newbern, North Carolina, March 13 & 14, 1862. He was slightly wounded by a spent ball, and being overcome by fatigue and exposure, was sent to the hospital. He was discharged June 22, 1892 with a disability due to typhoid fever. He re-enlisted December 20, 1863 with the 21st Massachusetts Infantry, which was on furlough, Under General Stevenson's 1st Division. He fought at the "Wilderness" May 6, 1864, then moved on to Spottsylvania "Bloody Angle," North Anna River, and Shady Grove Road. He mustered out October 8, 1864. Total length of service as one year and nine months. His sister compiled his story in 1892, which I still have. His narrative is invaluable to my family's history. I would love to share his story and help in this project.
