The US Civil War: War Between the States project is dedicated to those individuals who participated in this conflict in whatever capacity, whether a soldier, spy, or even those who supplied either side during the conflict. It is not necessary that you have an ancestor who fits this description. If you have an interest in this part of American history, you are more than welcome to participate.

Just post an ANSWER (not comment) below and I will gladly add you to the project (as well as the overall Military and War Project). Go to the project page to see what you can do to contribute our project!

Please request to be added to the Google Group as well as the Google Group for Military and War since this is a sub of that project.

My husband’s family was deeply affected by the Civil War. All 4 sons and all 4 daughters were in the war or married someone in the war. 2 sons died.
I have family that fought in the civil war on both sides. My family has found in every war. I am interested in the civil war. I would like to be added to the civil war project
Hi , I really enjoy history especially US and American history.
Yes

Thank you

Eugene
I would like to join the project,  I have been interested in the civil war ever since my mom took me to Shiloh TN as a preschooler.  I have had some experience searching WWII records to see what happened to my uncle. (things don't add up)

I did not have a genealogical interest in it, but if I continue developing the family line on which I am currently working, I may end up with a greater interest than previously, as I just discovered the brother of my one veteran was also a veteran (both died at Vicksburg).

(I already have the M&W badge, so am not seeking addition to this Project, just indicating possible interest and a maybe plea for help at some future time. cheeky)

For folks  interested in history of  the  CW in  Virginia, Robert J  Driver  wrote  a  series  of  books  about  the  Calvary units
I would very much like to be a part of this project. I have many Confederate ancestors. Some survived the war and others did not.
I thought I had this badge since I applied several months ago but I see I do not. I have been adding the sticker to profiles for some time now. Is there something I should be doing other that what I have done to get this badge and work in the group?

Thank you for your help.

Regards,

Nancy
Hi, I am interested in joining the U.S. Civil War project.

Thanks,

John
Nancy, I see your badge in our list of members of the Civil War Project.

https://www.wikitree.com/index.php?title=Special:Badges&u=14108468

John, I've added your badge. Here are the goals of the US Civil War Project:

  • Identify profiles of individuals who participated in this conflict.
  • Add the project sticker to their profile along with any other appropriate sticker such as POW, KIA, etc.
  • State Resource Pages. Compile resources for individual states and counties to assist others in researching ancestors/events in those locations. View the lists on the resource page at State Template Page to see individual states.
  • Categorize profiles appropriately in regards to military unit, locations, battles, etc.
  • PPP (Project Protected Profiles): Request that your participant be PPP'd via a project leader or any WikiTree Leader. Please do a search of all profiles with the correct last name at birth to identify the lowest numbered (original profile) profile to be protected. NOTE: There may be other profiles of the same person but with different spellings of the last name. For further explanation, please see: Process for Merges G2G.
Glad to have you aboard.
Thank you for adding me to the Civil War Project.  William Armstrong Coulter, my 2nd great grandfather served in the 1st Iowa Regiment - Calvary Unit.

I would like to join this project. I am interested in learning more about my ancestor's and their relatives roles on both sides. One of my objectives this year is to concentrate on this time frame and identify those in mine and my husband's family that served.

Thank you, Emily, for your interest in the Project. I've awarded you your US Civil War Project badge.

I am interested in joining this project. I am a member of the United Daughter's of the Confederacy and also live just outside Richmond, VA. As a UDC member I get FREE access to their library in downtown Richmond and all of their amazing records. Glad to look up records when I have time (which is not often I must sadly say). But, since I live close I can compile a bunch of requests and go to the library one day from time-to-time to look up records for folks that are not near.

I'd love to join. I'm a member of Descendants of Confederate Veterans of Texas, a non-political non-profit organization with history buffs. I have ancestors on both sides of this conflict including a great grandfather and other members of the family. Also, combatants from both sides of the War of Independence and other conflicts. These relationships sparked an interest in the various conflicts in general including the War Between the States. - Thanks

Andrew, from what I've seen in your participation on G2G, you are already doing a lot, creating veteran profiles, etc.! We appreciate that! Just continue the great work!

Hi Pip,

Not sure what I can do to help but would be willing to try.  I had family on both sides but the family I know most about died during the war in a northern military prison.

I am remiss in not joining this group sooner - shame on me.  I have many ancestors who need their service writeup  highlighted and expanded further.  My husband and I are in SCV and UDC and very interested in this historical period.  Keep up the good work!

I'd like to participate, perhaps work to document my relatives' roles.  I've hardly begun on the uncles who didn't survive to have descendants.  Quartermaster Genl Meigs is my 3rd ggf, Jefferson Davis' 1st wife Sarah Knox Taylor my 1C4R.  My ggm (whom I remember) was semi-orphaned at age 2 when her father died of unrecovered health and wounds although he had been discharged. During those 2 years her mother died and her father married his sister-in-law.  I haven't found anything on his service record.  The wives are Mayflower Hopkins+Brewster descendants as well as I can determine.  Supreme Court Justice McLean, author of the dissent on Dred Scott, my 4th ggf, died early in the war.  His grandparents aren't known confidently.  He had grandsons on both sides.  Two opposed brothers who survived were buried together in what became Zachary Taylor (Sarah's father) national cemetery.  How many CSA veterans are buried in US national cemeteries?  Another ggm, whom I met just before she passed away, was mentally back in 1916 and used accordingly racist talk, in spite of being daughter and granddaughter of Union officers who advocated freeing all enslaved people from captured territory. She was also 4C1R to Robt E Lee.  A 2nd ggf, W R Alger, was a well known abolitionist and chaplain to Massachusetts General Court (legislature). Yet another 2nd ggf met his 2nd wife as both worked on underground railroad.  That may be beyond the remit of this project.

Since last month, I've been looking for forebears of my parents-in-law who served in the Civil War. So far I've found:

Hawkins-9911

Hawkins-11597

Hawkins-11598

Hawkins-11599

Hawkins-9910

Ashworth-1047

Driggs-157

I also discovered

Nelson-20595, a Major of Virginia Cavalry in both the Wars of 1776 and 1812.

May I please have a badge for the War of 1812?
by Living Vaughan G2G6 Mach 2 (27.5k points)

Hi William! I see you already have the badge for the US Civil War. There isn't one for the War of 1812. but the Project's guidelines are HERE. Thanks for your willingness to assist!
