The US Civil War: War Between the States project is dedicated to those individuals who participated in this conflict in whatever capacity, whether a soldier, spy, or even those who supplied either side during the conflict. It is not necessary that you have an ancestor who fits this description. If you have an interest in this part of American history, you are more than welcome to participate.

Just post an ANSWER (not comment) below and I will gladly add you to the project (as well as the overall Military and War Project). Go to the project page to see what you can do to contribute our project!

Please request to be added to the Google Group as well as the Google Group for Military and War since this is a sub of that project.

My husband’s family was deeply affected by the Civil War. All 4 sons and all 4 daughters were in the war or married someone in the war. 2 sons died.
I have family that fought in the civil war on both sides. My family has found in every war. I am interested in the civil war. I would like to be added to the civil war project
Hi , I really enjoy history especially US and American history.
Yes

Thank you

Eugene
I would like to join the project,  I have been interested in the civil war ever since my mom took me to Shiloh TN as a preschooler.  I have had some experience searching WWII records to see what happened to my uncle. (things don't add up)

I did not have a genealogical interest in it, but if I continue developing the family line on which I am currently working, I may end up with a greater interest than previously, as I just discovered the brother of my one veteran was also a veteran (both died at Vicksburg).

(I already have the M&W badge, so am not seeking addition to this Project, just indicating possible interest and a maybe plea for help at some future time. cheeky)

For folks  interested in history of  the  CW in  Virginia, Robert J  Driver  wrote  a  series  of  books  about  the  Calvary units
I would very much like to be a part of this project. I have many Confederate ancestors. Some survived the war and others did not.
I thought I had this badge since I applied several months ago but I see I do not. I have been adding the sticker to profiles for some time now. Is there something I should be doing other that what I have done to get this badge and work in the group?

Thank you for your help.

Regards,

Nancy
Hi, I am interested in joining the U.S. Civil War project.

Thanks,

John
Nancy, I see your badge in our list of members of the Civil War Project.

https://www.wikitree.com/index.php?title=Special:Badges&u=14108468

John, I've added your badge. Here are the goals of the US Civil War Project:

  • Identify profiles of individuals who participated in this conflict.
  • Add the project sticker to their profile along with any other appropriate sticker such as POW, KIA, etc.
  • State Resource Pages. Compile resources for individual states and counties to assist others in researching ancestors/events in those locations. View the lists on the resource page at State Template Page to see individual states.
  • Categorize profiles appropriately in regards to military unit, locations, battles, etc.
  • PPP (Project Protected Profiles): Request that your participant be PPP'd via a project leader or any WikiTree Leader. Please do a search of all profiles with the correct last name at birth to identify the lowest numbered (original profile) profile to be protected. NOTE: There may be other profiles of the same person but with different spellings of the last name. For further explanation, please see: Process for Merges G2G.
Glad to have you aboard.
Thank you for adding me to the Civil War Project.  William Armstrong Coulter, my 2nd great grandfather served in the 1st Iowa Regiment - Calvary Unit.

I have researched the Civil War pension abstracts of those with the Harney surname.  How do I flag them as having fought in the Civil War?
by Linda MacDonald G2G1 (1.8k points)

Hi Linda, and sorry to take so long in responding. Here's a link with detailed instructions on flagging a profile and also categorizing a person's service during the War:

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Project:US_Civil_War:_War_Between_the_States#Sticker_that_can_be_used_in_Biography

Hope this helps!

My 3rd great-grandfather (whose profile I have yet to do on this site) died of dysentery. (I had to contact Find a Grave because they had him listed as married to his daughter who shared the same name of his wife---they corrected that, thank goodness. I also asked them to use the term dysentery rather than I don't even want to write it! out of respect, but I don't they did that. Had wanted to take possession of his memorial because he served and died and left behind two children, and I felt I could take better care of him than the Association of the Civil War Veterans, but at least my David Burr Bartram is no longer in an incestuous relationship.

But as I've been working on family, I've learned about how so many people in my family have fought in this war and in others (all the way back to the French and Indian War) and through to the present), I feel the need to show my respect for everyone who gave up their lives, or who were willing to give it. My grandfather dropped out of high school to "protect" his brother who had dropped out of high school. and each lied about their ages to participate in WW II, and both became fighter pilates. Back to the Civil War, I also have another ancestor who had just moved to this country from Germany, and he immediately (as did his brother, my 2nd great-uncle) joined. He survived, but was injured, as were so many.

I'd love to show them that their service is remembered, even if it's just in this tiny way (compared to what they did and were willing to sacrifice).

Hi Tamara! Thanks for you interest in the US Civil War Project. I've awarded you your badge. You are doing a great job sourcing your profiles and are writing excellent bios. As soon as you can, create that profile for your Civil War ancestor. If you need assistance, let me know!

I would like to join the US Civil War project.  I had ancestors who served both sides during the war.  They were from Kentucky which was a border state.  As such, I had ancestors who served for the Union and others who served the Confederacy.

I am interested particularly because of where I am from and live. I live in Cumberland County, Tennessee on the Cumberland Plateau.

Many of my ancestors fought.

GGGF Capt. James R Thompson from Roane County served in the USA 5th Tennessee Infantry, Co. B.

GGGF Pvt. Thomas Collett from Roane County served in the 1st Tennessee Infantry

GGGF Pvt. William Henry Osborne from White County served in the CSA 13th Tennessee Calvary, Co. A.

GGGF Pvt. Henderson Tudor from Fentress County served in tbe CSA 22nd Infantry, Co. D

Here on the Plateau we suffered greatly from guerilla attacks from both sides

I would like to be part of the Civil War Project. I recently wrote a profile for my wife's 3rd GGF, Jacob Bauer, a German emigrant and farmer with a family, who was drafted into the Civil War. As it turns out, he saw action against General Lee and was there at the end of the Civil War, and was also part of the Grand Review. Thankfully, Wisconsin has excellent public records for their Civil War soldiers.

In the process of writing this biography, I learned more about the Civil War than I had previously known. This, to me, is one of the greatest benefits of sharing genealogy on Wikitree. We learn about history while also learning about our ancestry.

I have at least 4 direct ancestors who fought in the Civil war.   Possibly 5.   I have pictures of 3 of them.    John Thomas Lafayette ( Jack)  Baldwin.   Robert A. Green.   And Alexander Jackson Poor.    I dont have a picture of Daniel Kelley but he fought also.     It is possible John Morgan Kelly fought also.

I am interested in this project.  My Great Great Grandfather, Henry Edwin Huntington (Huntington-1425) fought in the Civil War as part of Co. H, 2nd Veterans Cavalry (Co. H, 2 Bn NYSG.

The only link to HIS ancestry are the names of "Edward and Helen (Berry) Huntington on his Death Certificate.

He was married twice, first to Ellen Perigo and secondly to Hellen E. Berry which are both listed in his Military and pension records.
