How do I remove Thomas Smith from my tree? It’s been confirmed that we’re not related so he’s got to go.

Hi Mark, great question.  You didn't provide a link to the profiles you're referring to so we have to look at your tree and make a guess as to which Thomas you're referring to.  In your tree I see Thomas Smith (1605-1693) as the father of James Smith, b. 18 Sep 1837.  Thomas Smith's profile is managed by the PGM (Puritan Great Migration) Project and Thomas' bio shows that his son is James Smith, born 18 Sep 1837.

When you're working on profiles that are managed by other members and projects it is a good idea to reach out to the existing profile managers and let them know your concerns, post any sources you have and make a recommendation to make a change.  You can post a comment to the profile comments and if after some time, if no one objects, you could make the change.  Even if you have a source that disproves something on a profile, it is always a good idea to signal your intentions when others are involved and engage all who are interested in the profile (descendants, managers, project members, etc).

Well said.

It may also be relevant to try to localize where the line goes wrong - it may be further downstream.

Since you have a source which shows he shouldn't be there, go to his son James and on the Edit tab down the right hand side will be Thomas as father.  Under Thomas's name is a text link replace/remove father].  Click on it and unlink Thomas (the remove button is right at the bottom).
