I am so impressed with this document.  James (as most of the population) could not read or write.  Signing with an X was acceptable with or without a witness on most documents. Witnesses were usually required for government documents however.  I will locate an envelope and letter that was a notification of pension addressed to his widow confirming her receipt of his pension.
