He was mulatto, so his father was white and his mother was a slave. If he lived in the house with the white family, he was what was called a child of the plantation, meaning his white father didn't leave him in slave quarters and maybe regarded him as a son. His birth, however, would not be recorded the way white children's were.

My gg+ grammy, Letha, the wife of Wilson Lee, was a child of the plantation. Her daddy/owner was Benjamin Roach. Mr. Roach, contrary to the law then, educated Letha and even tried to send her to medical school.
i just remember mom saying to Cureton’s was our family? Do you know how to find out who his mom was?
if you can locate a list of female slaves owned by the Curetons , one may be on the 1870 census, but no way to know for sure. slave births were not registered except in plantation books and then listed as property owned .

you can try looking for Cureton wills and see if he is listed in one
Ok I got a note and maybe one day we can fugue it all out.  Thanks for helping Eddie King

Cureton Huff House

John Cureton's granddaughter Jane married Pascal Dacus Huff and got the house in 1865

Ok he is my first cousin 4 times removed so not a direct line but if the Cureton’s are descendants of John Spearman 1600’s of Essex, Virginia then this is going to be a lot of research

Check out www.familysearch.com for "Cureton" resident in Greenville Co, SC in 1850, 1860, 1870 and 1880 Census. Fast look on the 1850 revealed "a horde" of "Cureton" living there
by Susan Smith G2G6 Pilot (657k points)
I looked but didn’t come up with anything on Charles Cureton b.1850, his parents may have died and he may not be on a census with his family, I know he is related some how to John Moon Cureton b.1779 SC Cureton-114 because in the Cureton-Huff house in Simpsonville was where he lived with the Lewis Huff b.1804 SC, Family

so what I’m trying to find out is how the Cureton and Huff Family is connected.

mom mentioned Dunn, Cureton, Huff, and Welborn Family was some of her line, Huff is a direct connection

thanks again for helping
James Richard Huff lived in the Cureton-Huff house and he was a third great grandson of John Moon Cureton so I guess I’m looking for James Richard Huff they are also a family cemetery on this property of The Cureton-Huff House in Simpsonville, Greenville area but I can’t find it. So I guess now I’m looking for Huff and Cureton’s Cemetery’s
