Every area in New Zealand has a provincial anniversary day public holiday, although there have been no provinces as such since 1876. Today it’s the turn of Nelson, at the Top of the South Island. The day commemorates the arrival of the “Fifeshire” in 1842. She carried the first batch of NZ Company colonists into Nelson Haven. The “Fifeshire” was wrecked a few weeks later on 27 February when she set sail for China and struck Arrow or Fifeshire Rock which still sIts in the middle of the harbour.

I saw a band from Nelson at the Australian Open in Melbourne on Tuesday last week. Do you know Broods? Their show was fun!
Clare, in NZ there are two degrees of separation. I taught with their music teacher, Andrew Penman of Salmonella Dub,  (in another school) and he set them off on their musical career via the Rockquest competition.

That's so awesome about your Broods connection, and I remember Salmonella Dub, too!

Happy anniversary day to you, Fiona, and to all those with a Nelson connection
