This is the photograph of my parents wedding day. The religious ceremony took place on November 14th 1959 at Jesus en el Huerto de los Olivos catholic church in Olivos, Vicente Lopez, Buenos Aires, Argentina. Since there was no legal divorce at the time in Argentina, and BOTH families were convinced that the marriage wouldn't last, the civil marriage ceremony took place in Montevideo, Uruguay (just across the Rio de la Plata) a few days earlier. My dad passed away a few months shorter of their 50th anniversary.

This is my parent's only wedding photo.  She was 16 and he was 20.

The love of my grandfather's life was his wife, Beatrice Reamer Neal Underwood, to whom he was married for 65+ years until he died. Here she is at 16:

She was 23 when they married, and she always told me I couldn't get married until I was the same age of my grandfather when he married her - 32.. I though this silly, but that was the way it turned out. I was 32 when I married the love of my life.

Genealogy is not just about our ancestors, but remembering that we make our own stories as we go for our descendents. I absolutely love this picture of my son and his wife on their wedding day, and for me with the moss in the trees, and the old time feel of a New Orleans wedding, this is the picture of romance.

This is a photo taken in 1896 in Buffalo, New York of my husband's great grandparents. Mary Myles had emigrated from Canada to New York three years earlier. Columbus Albines Hennen met her there, and they fell in love. Mary died in 1923, and he buried her in Gage, Oklahoma with a beautiful white marble headstone with this epitaph--Earth's fairest flowers bloom but to die.

Thank you Robin for your sweet comment. I never noticed the jewelry in her hair until I scanned the photo. The photo is in excellent condition, so I can not figure out if she has a small piece of jewelry glued below her eye.

My great uncle Herbert Brock eloped with Mary E Sharp to Maryland and married on March 10, 1945.

My dad's parents, Victor and Helen (Mampel) Stromsted.  They met at a bus stop in Minneapolis (for my grandfather it was love at first sight) and were married for 51 years.

My mother in law and father in law had a wonderful romance.  They met in a dance class at the University of Maryland and married in 1954.  They were married for over fifty years when Audrey passed away.

This picture of my great grandmother always makes me think of "the perfect date," and I wonder if this was a date with my great grandfather or if it was taken later.  Whenever it is, it is early in their lives together.

There is a story handed down the family about my Great Grandparents.

My great grandpa, Francis "Frank" Asbury Allison (1871-1925) was being chased by two (2) gals ... the gals were very good friends.  Frank finally choose one of them, Maude Saltzman-Allison  (1870-1892).  They were married 25 JUL 1890.

Maude became ill soon after ... she lost her battle and left this earth on 22 JUL 1892.  Maude wrote her friend a letter and also on her death bed she asked her good friend to make sure Frank was not alone.  She asked her to marry Frank.

So a couple of years later, my Great Grandma, Etta May Omelia-Allison (1872-1944), married Frank on 16 AUG 1894.

The story concludes with the belief that they were a very happy couple ... they had three (3) children together ... including my grandma, Oma M Allison-Rammel (1895-1995).  

And they both visited Maude's grave often.

This is a picture of my mom in 1934-35, her senior year in high school.  She and my dad married soon after and he always said this picture was "the cause of it all" referring to the fact that they had eight children in a few months over 12 years and stayed happily married until his death 56 years later.

I'm told that when my great-grandfather met my great-grandmother, it was love at first sight. My mother tells me that he was head-over-heels in love. Ella Bernice Knight was born in 1882 in Missouri and Frederick Eugene Atkinson was born in 1883 in the Dakota Territory, but they met in Eastern Colorado. They got married in 1909. Attached are a wedding photo, a portrait from 1941, and a candid shot from 1950. My mother's sister inherited a collection of letters they wrote to each other over the years of their courtship and throughout their marriage. Frederick loved Ella as much on the day he died as on the day they met.

My grandparents, Lillian Constance Wark Ceruti and her husband Edward Burton Ceruti, had 16 or 17 children. Romance was in the air for many years. Happy Valentine's day to all.

I share the photo of James McComb, my 2nd great grandfather. Although I do not know the details of his romance, his big smile with his ten grown children around him is enough for me. This photo used to be on the Huntertown Historical Society (Indiana) although I never downloaded it then. This download is from a FamilySearch.org user.

Wedding photo, 11 Apr 1900. Despite coming from a polygamous family the love of my great-grandfather's life was his sole wife Margaret. He could have had additional wives but he refused which was fortunate because the Mexican Revolution scattered these LDS colonists back into the United States where polygamy was outlawed.

My birth mother Lois Elaine Laurin and my father Floyd Harrison Cook were married on July 3, 1965, in Peterborough, Hillsborough, New Hampshire; at the Peterborough Methodist Church - Lois' father Rev. Sven Laurin performed the ceremony

This is my wife's great-aunt, Audy Austin Locke, with her husband Robin Locke. They were married immediately after World War II, and this was taken a year or two later. I have several pictures of them together, taken from 1945 through 1983, and I get the sense from all of them that they loved each other very much.

Richard, thank you for sharing your photo of Audy and Robin. When I looked at the photo my first thought was, they are in Oklahoma. Then I looked at their profiles, and I would bet  they are in Grady Co., Oklahoma. Wherever they are they certainly look happy.

A wedding portrait of Harry and Edna (Nutter) Wieland. My great grandparents on mother's father's side. They were married in 1907.

I guess I think their story was so romantic because Harry was an orphan train adoptee who wound up with such a big family he must have been overwhelmed with love. My grandfather alone had 11 children who gave Harry nearly fifty great grandchildren! That's a lot of romance...cheap farm labor...both?

This is a photo of my great-aunt, Peggy Harrison, and her second husband Jim Calvert. The way they looked at each other in this picture is so sweet... My friend even thought it was from a movie.

Love seeing pictures of submariners, since I am one myself.  The name Jim Calvert seems to ring a bell, but I can't put my finger on it right now. I'll have to look up which submarine(s) he commanded - don't get to be a Rear Admiral without having had command of a boat.

Now that I've refreshed my memory - I read a book he wrote about his experiences on fleet submarines during World War II.

When I was a boy, I read about the USS Skate surfacing under the ice at the North Pole when he was in command (just learned that today). That story (and some others) led me to a career in the submarine force long before I read his book about WWII.

52 Photos Week 6: Romance

I love romance, and my husband has always been very romantic. Even back to when we were first engaged.

Momence (our hometown) has a beautiful Island Park.  I have so many wonderful memories of things our family did when I was a kid at the island. Family reunions, my dad's company picnics, church picnics - it just seemed to be the place to go. There was a west side of the island, then you had to go under a railroad bridge to get to the east side of the island. During our gladiolus festival there is always a flea market on the west side and an old car show on the east side.

Michael and I met on February 15, 1987, and on April 15, 1987, we were on a date and he took me for a ride. We went to the Island Park over to the east side. When we reached a bench that looked like the picture above, he asked me to get out of the car, and to side on the bench. That was where he proposed to me.

After I accepted him, he told me that he father had proposed to his mother on that bench. I told him I thought that was very romantic. We got in the car and drove on a little bit - and low and behold - we saw another bench between 2 trees.  He asked me to get out, and he proposed to me again. He said he wanted to make sure he proposed to me on the same bench that his father had proposed to his mother.

Well, I could make this long - but we ran across another five benches and went through the same process. He wanted to make sure he covered his tracks.

Then we went to his parents house and shared our good news. All of a sudden his dad stared laughing and couldn't stop. Mike's face turned a little red. He wasn't sure what had happened.

When his father could breathe again, Mike said "Father, didn't you say you proposed to mother on one of those benches?"  His dad said, yes I did.  Michael asked him what was so funny.

His dad said, "Well Michael, they cut the trees down with the bench on it several years ago, and covered it up to make a road".  But your heart was in the right place.

We all laughed, but I knew that Michael was a little disappointed.  He tried so hard to make it a romantic proposal.
