HAPPY FEBRUARY!

Hear Ye, Hear Ye

If you are interested in people who are famous, notable, noted, significant, important, historic, heroic, or otherwise fascinating, then the Notables Project might be for you!

The idea behind this post is for anyone who needs help with connecting Notables to the tree to post to this thread and ask for help, or if you want to tell us whom you have successfully connected up, or if you want to join the Notables Project and get a badge.

Besides checking out the Notables Project page, don't forget to take a look at the Notables List page, where you can find lists of Notables who have profiles which aren't yet connected to the main tree. (For ideas on way to connect unconnected people and branches, see the Hints and Tips on the Connectors Chat page.)

Please remember to concentrate on those Notables who have already passed (died), so that we can see their profiles. If you create a profile for a living Notable, that profile WILL GO UNLISTED and no one can see it except for the PM and anyone on the trusted list!

And remember - Notables should have a Wikipedia page at the very least to qualify. And they should be DEAD! If you manage a profile for any living notable, would you please replace any Notables categories on that profile with [[Category:Living Notables]]? That could clear out a lot of profiles that people can't work on from the various Notables categories, and also keep all the living notables in one place to make them easy to find, should the need arise.

Just a reminder that it's Black History Month, so this is usually the time we all take a good look out there as it relates to our Black Notables in history and see what we can do as a team to address profiles that lack a connection to the global tree, profiles that need a better biography, profiles that lack photos, profiles that lack family members, or even ones that are missing key categories or even the Notables Sticker. If someone wants to do a bit of name dropping, I wouldn't mind (and hopefully others wouldn't either) taking a look and seeing if there's not something that can't be done to improve these profiles and maybe even see if we can't get one of them as Profile of the Week one of these days.

Mark, I was as surprised as you were that James Brown did not have a profile. He does now.

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Brown-102887

Hi Scott, you replied to Mark but it was I who pointed out James Brown's lack of a profile. Thanks for adding him!
I was secondarily surprised when I read your comment that you were surprised!
I mean I was surprised that JB didn't have a profile, not that you were surprised. It does not surprise me that you would be surprised at JB's lack of a profile.

Selma Burke was a sculptor whose portrait of FDR is on the dime.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Selma_Burke

She doesn't have a profile yet.

Sorry about that Jessica! I must have been half asleep when I posted. I'll try the "more than one eye open" technique from now on.
How does 'profile of the month' happen?
This is probably not 100% accurate, but it's close (I think). And it's profile of the week (not month).

There's a committee of Admins with some input from Leaders who put together a rough schedule of who and when they would like to consider showcasing on various weeks. When they're able, they share a thread out on G2G of either who they're proposing or let people know that they're soliciting for profiles, in either case, people often jump on the thread and throw out profiles as suggestions that are then considered by the committee.

Once a profile has been selected, it is swapped (I think it's Monday morning, but don't quote me) from the old one to the new one, and within the database, special links are extended to allow everyone that's connected to the global tree to find their path to the profile of the week.

This is done weekly for typically one Notable and one WikiTree Leader/Coordinator/or other so that everyone can see how they connect up with him or her.

When the special links are removed, you can only get maybe 10 steps out of the regular connection links or a bit more of you're connected by blood, so if they're any further away than that, you won't be able to see your connection unless they become of profile of the week again.

At least I think this is a fairly decent description of what goes on. Hopefully this answered the question.
Woo Hoo!

James Brown is now connected to the global tree. The first connection I set up I was a bit iffy about and may end up disconnecting. Just doesn't seem to be enough evidence and there are several conflicting unsourced possibilities that made me reconsider how convincing that was.

So, I went back to the drawing board, and found not one but two additional connections and these look much more convincing as well as having reasonable sources to prove it. So the new connections will kick in tonight but he's connected by that first tentative connection now.
Wow that's amazing Scott! As a fellow connector, I know what an effort that was.

I started a profile for James Healy https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Healy-1430 2 years ago during Black History Month. I have worked some on this family but it is still unconnected. Some of his siblings should also be notables.

Oh neat - had no idea about him. Thanks, Francis!

I have finally been able to link Henrietta Lacks to her ancestor Joel Lax thanks to census records and family trees on Family Search.

Joel Lax

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Lax-221

Henrietta Lacks

(Book - The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks)

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Pleasant-156

The connections should go through tonight. Henrietta has been unconnected since 2015!!!

PS Henrietta was black!!

She's a good choice! She's one of those right-place, right-time Notables who didn't do anything specifically famous, but because of her being in that spot in time, she will never be forgotten (well - once you understand her contribution to DNA and medical science from reading the profile and the Wikipedia page, it all makes sense). I had to pay attention to them naming the DNA as HeLa (her name abbreviated, methinks), in which case her name will always be attached to DNA science.
You gotta read the book as well, Scott!!!

It is very interesting, and yes I am reading it right now....
HeLa cells are the most numerous human cells on the planet. They are so robust and aggressive that they invade other cell cultures. And they are immortal, in the sense that they can keep dividing forever but not necessarily live forever.

Canadian Pro Hockey Player Brian Glennie has died. He was 73. (1946 - 2020)

I don't think he has a profile yet. And with no parents or spouse mentioned, it may be hard to find a connection.

Actor and Comedian Orson Bean was sadly hit by a car and killed this week. He was 91 years old.  (bn 1928)

His real name was Dallas Frederick Burrows.

https://ca.news.yahoo.com/actor-comedian-orson-bean-91-114135652.html

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orson_Bean

There are some profiles for living Burrows dated to the 1920s so I dont know if he already has a profile.
by Robynne Lozier G2G Astronaut (1.3m points)

I saw the other thread on this, and they have a profile for him now.

Just made a profile for him as it appears no one ever made one before:

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Falk-805

I always loved him in the Wild Wild West.

It's been a bad month for movie stars. First Kirk Douglas, then Orson Bean, now Robert Conrad.
Forgot to update that he's connected to the Global Tree.

Famous actor E.G. Robinson is now connected to the global tree. His connection is a bit unusual, since he's Romanian and I couldn't really go far with that approach, but through his ex-wife and another of her ex-husbands, I was able to draw a line that ran all the way up into an early New Netherland settler (the Van Westervelt's).

For Valentine's Day, I decided to work up a spreadsheet for my wife's maiden name similar to the one I've worked up for my Slade Name Study. Fortunately for me, there aren't a lot of people on WikiTree with Rucks as a Last Name At Birth, so it wasn't a multi-month project.

As it happens, are there aren't a lot of Ruckses on ThePeerage.com or on Wikipedia, either. I only found one Rucks on each site, so I created profiles for them:

The sourcing is kind of slim on both of them, and only one is connected to the main tree. So if anybody wants to help flesh out their profiles and build out their family trees, I think that would make a nice treat for her.

Long overdue, the French writer Guy de Maupassant (1850-1893) is now connected. https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/De_Maupassant-1

Great job, Bernard! Thank you!
I second this! Great job and great to see him connected at last!

I've spotted two profiles managed by the project account who are marked living but are actually deceased. Tried to get your guys attention about them but so far *crickets*
by Richard Shelley G2G6 Pilot (246k points)
How about links to those profiles Richard?

Pretty please?

Thanks.

Certainly! Wigram-8 (this is a pending merge) and Wigram-9 (KIA WWII)

DUH they are still unlisted.

How do you KNOW those 2 specific profiles are deceased?

What are your sources?

Right so Wigram-8 is George Neville Clive Wigram... He died in 2017 at the age of 101. Wigram-9 being his brother Francis Clive Wigram who was killed during 1943. I mean both dates are mentioned in the Wikipedia article for their father Clive Wigram

BTW: Clive's profile being: Wigram-5

I'll take a look when I get home on these and probably have them open tonight. Thanks!
OK - privacy has been corrected, both profiles are opened up, and the merge has been completed.

MLB Toronto Blue Jays Player - Tony Fernandez - has died. I dont think he can be connected easily since he was from the Dominican Republic. Have no idea if he has a profile or not.

He was also only 57 so records could be very hard to find for both him and his parents making connecting him difficult as well.

Ugandan born actress Nikita Pearl Waligwa has passed away from a brain tumour. She was only 15 years old. Again, I am reporting this, but don't worry if she cannot be connected.

Graeme Allwright, a folk singer born in New Zealand who made his career in France, died this Sunday in his retirement home in France, at age 93. This is my very first attempt at a NZ profile - gulp! Luckily his maternal grandparents were already on WikiTree.

Fortunately, you have several New Zealand experts around here, so it's nice that you can count on them for a bit of assistance if needed.

I just created a stub profile for Barbara Remington, the artist who drew the covers for the paperback editions of Lord of the Rings.  She passed away on January 23.

Her obituary is here.

She gave an interview in 2018, you can read it here.

They need to qualify for a Wikipedia page. They do not already have to have one. I think this is an important distinction as we work to diversify our Notables, since the vast majority of Wikipedia pages cover cis-het white men. In fact one of the ways we can add diversity to both WikiTree and Wikipedia is by discovering diverse Notables within our family trees who have not received the recognition they deserve, adding them to the project, and creating Wikipedia pages for them

I manage three Notables within my family tree. None of them previously had Wikipedia pages. Sophar Rangoon (https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Rangoon-5) now has a Wikipedia page (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sophar_Rangoon). The other two are referred to on Wikipedia but do not yet have their own Wikipedia pages.

From the Notables Project Page:

"Qualifications for Profiles

"We use Wikipedia's standards for notability. Note, though, that many notable people do not yet have a page on Wikipedia. Feel free to ask Project Leaders about whether someone meets the guidelines, or read through them yourself and use your best judgment. Many, many important people are not on WikiTree yet!"

Generally we try to float names of those who don't have a Wikipedia page or are on one of the National Biography type books/websites so that we're not going too far off the deep end, but this is still accurate. The way I look at it is if we "could" submit and have approved a Wikipedia page for that person, then we can give them Notable status. But in the past we've had several people come up with recommendations for Notables that never seem to quite hit the mark. So generally it's best to ask unless you have a very strong grasp of Wikipedia Notables standards.
Wikipedia has a pretty clear set of standards for who qualifies for a page. For the profiles I've added, I looked for fairly extensive coverage of that person in their own time period. My other two profiles have a lot of news coverage. Sophar was less written about in his time and mostly through his connection to the Duke of Sussex, but his story alone makes him notable - a point which the Wikipedia editors clearly agreed with. He's also been written about in several books

They do need to be more than "my favorite ancestor that did a cool thing once." I like to build an extensive Sources section showing significant newspaper coverage and/or multiple book references before I add the Notables sticker to the profile.
Sounds like you have a good grasp of Wiki's standards, so no worries. But it's always good to caution others who may fall into the "favorite ancestor" mode. For example, my g-something-grandfather was the first carpenter in New Amsterdam, built the first church, built the first homes, and build the Wall that's called Wall Street... BUT, he's not a Notable. Sometimes doing a lot of firsts and a lot of cool things doesn't exactly qualify you for name recognition like a bit part movie star who just happens to show up for one part of one movie that everyone remembers. Notability is an awfully fickle thing.
