Bernice is my grandmother  I want to find her parents. She was born in Louisiana 1925 and died 1998 in California . She never would talk about her past. But she said she was an only child. My uncle believes her father is buried in yolo county, California .I have found documents with the last name of Evett and Hodges . She died a Puisis. She was only married for five months to the man but she used his name for the next 20+ years until she passed.

Thank you for your help. The only reason I didn't think this was my grandma is she told us , she was an only child. And for some reason she would not talk about her past. If you have any ideas that might help me I would love the info. I am registered  with Ancestry.com

I traced this Bernice and found she is not the one. Ancestry associates this one with with someone else. Thank you for all you are doing. I just looked again and did find 1930 census only with a different mother. My grandma only had two children my mom has passed on and my uncle dose not know much.
What i"m wondering is why she is listed as Evett when she married William Puisis? Was she married twice? Was she adopted?

Betty
If it's the same Bernice, she was married to an Evett, Alvis Clinton Swader, and Walter Puisis. I'm still looking for a marriage document for Evett probably in Louisiana.
She married Walter Puisis in 1971 at that time she went by  Evett . I can't find a marriage from Bass to Evett. I have some old dog and fishing licenses with the last name of Evett and Hodges. My uncle said he always thought her Marin name was Hodges. When I called social security office to inquire about. Death certificate they told me her madien name was Bass. My grandma was very hush-hush about her past. On my mothers birth cert. my grandma listed Bass as her madien name and on my uncles three years later she listed Hodges. My mom and uncle didn't even know their father. He is the Alvis Swader she lived with in 1955. I also found an annulment record for Alvis and my grandma in 1953. My mom was born 1954 and my uncle 1957. I know this is confusing and I really appreciate your help.
I did find a Bernice Hodges in 1940 she was ward of the state
In Oklahoma?

Betty
Yes . I just figure something bad must have happened to my grandma to make her not want to talk about her past

I believe this was a college institution.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chickasha,_Oklahoma

In 1908, the Oklahoma Industrial Institute and College for Girls was established in Chickasha. A local rancher named J. B. Sparks donated land for the school in memory of his daughter, Nellie. The girl was a Chickasaw descendent, and the land had been part of her allotment. The Nellie Sparks Dormitory commemorated her. The school was renamed as the Oklahoma College for Women in 1916. It became coeducational in 1965, and was renamed the Oklahoma College of Liberal Arts. It was renamed again in 1975 as the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma.[5]

I poked in ---------- Bass born 1900 and had daughter Bernice and died in Yolo, California. I came up with six or eight maybe records for Bernice's father.

Name: Billie Lee Bass

I am not sure but my uncle said she did kind of use men. Well since 1982 I was around my grandma and she never had a man. My uncle said he remembers living in Stockton , CA. Until he was ten (1967). My grandma was dating a man named Tony Pastoria. And he left his wife for my grandma. And even thou my moms last name is Swader she was always under the impression that a man named Something Estas was her father .my mom and uncle neither one knew their fathers. I hope this sheds some light on why I am having such a hard time. The only other things I know about my grandman are she was a welder during WW2 when women helped do men jobs, and she picked Cotten in SloughHouse, CA. She never worked that I ever knew of. Thanks again for all your help.  Please feel free to ask me anything that might help.          Richelle
I guess the question was kind of blunt, my apologies. So what we've got is a person who had several last names but whose maiden name was Bass and might be listed under Hodges. There are no easy questions on this site are there? :)

Betty

In this census they are listed as Negor but in earlier censuses the Head of the house is listed as White.

Yes  this is hard, but I really enjoy the search. I always wanted to be a detective  I I'd some searching and found out all the marriages for Eddie, Arron, Simmie, Elrader. Are not my grandma because of the birth year on most. I found it on the divorce records. Now as far as my uncle and I know my grandma was mostly in Stockton , CA. And Sacramento, CA.  But I did find the record with Alvis Swader for Annulment in Humboldt County, CA 1955 newspaper artical. Which is kind of unny because that's where I live now. And places in Butte county where Alvis lived is where I moved to from Sacramento before here. I find it kind of ironic that I have always wanted to find out about my grandma because she was like my mother to me I feel that is where my roots come from. And I have lived most of the places that I find out  she's been. Thanks this is awesome to be able to go over this with someone else.    Richelle
No need to appoliges I was not offended. I really appreciate the help. Have a great day I will check back in this evening when I get home from work.
The difficult part (one of the difficult parts anyway) of genealogy is that women change their birthdates to fit their mood at the time. Some women do anyway. It makes marriage and birth records hard to verify.
