Actor Jim Varney, best known for portraying the character Ernest P. Worrell in a series of commercials and films throughout the '80s and '90s, passed away on 10 Feb 2000.

I remember at least one movie, but I agree that the commercials always made me laugh. I get the impression he was a pretty good comedian and landed that gig because he had a good schtick that made others laugh.
