I have relatives with the surname Elphinstone-Holloway. Is it correct to input the hyphen?

Was surprised that the id came up as Elphinstone-Holloway-1.

Surnames can be hyphenated; if so, they should be input as hyphenated on the relevant individual's profile.

The image of Ismay's contemporary baptism registration shows the hyphenated surname for the family. Unless a contemporary birth registration is found showing a different birth surname, her birth surname is correct per WikiTree's general naming guidelines (my interpretation, at least).

The first question you would need to ask, is can you verify through primary sources (e..g, birth certificate, parish register, etc.) that her LNAB was indeed hyphenated?

If you can verify with minimal doubt that her her LNAB was indeed hyphenated, then it is entirely appropriate to include it as such.

Thanks Steve. I was/am certain of the hyphen. You will have noted in the records you kindly shared that there is inconsistent spelling of “Elphinstone” with and without the final “e”. Many records show the Elphinstone bit as an initial on its own. I’m struggling to share my sources as over the last decade or so I’ve developed a substantial and sourced tree in Ancestry. I was surprised that Ismay is the first E-H in the shared tree. The Elphinstones, Holloways, and E-H's were significant naval families. I’ve got big L plates on at present! Mike
