For users of Newspaper searching in Australia the National Library Australia (NLA) is currently giving a sneek peek at a new Trove site till 24 Feb 2020 - no indication as to when it comes online

First glance appears refreshing - may take some getting used to.

Hey Roger, yes I had a look earlier today.  I note that it's a preview rather than necessarily the finished product.

I'm personally not terribly attracted to it for a few reasons:

  • The display is less 'compact'. Thumbnails are nice, but there is more scrolling required to scan for relevant files when searching
  • The proportions seem to be fixed so it doesn't navigate well on my iPad (and I probably do about 25% of my WikiTreeing on that)
  • I don't mind the movement of the filters from the left to the right-hand side but how they now expand (all at once rather than progressively on some) makes it slower to find the ones you want.
That said, on the last point, I like that it's now possible to select multiple filters in the same category.  This is a great addition.
Cheers Peter - Like you I use Trove a lot - looks as if they have more to finalise before going online. I hope they keep the ability to correct text.
Yes, I've been using Trove for years.  It has its limited benefits when you can't find things on BDM Australia for instance, and it is a fascinating insight into the history of past times.  Pre-Marriage celebrations and Marriage descriptions are very detailed, not only mentioning family members, which you can research yourself, but the things they wore, how they travelled on their honeymoon (e.g. train to Sydney) etc.  Death notices are a valuable source of family connections too.

I agree that their spelling in transcriptions could be better, but enlarging the original paper article usually allows you to figure it out.   When you think of what a mammoth task they have achieved over the years, they have done a marvellous job.
Agree Linda - when I find the piece I need - spend a minute or two & correct the text.
I always correct the item I am interested in and usually the surrounding items as well.
Well done Meika - makes future searches by others easier to find
Does it work that way now? I haven't checked recently but one of the flaws a couple of years back was that corrected text wasn't reflected in search results.

From the help pages

The primary purpose of text correction is to improve the accuracy of search results in Trove’s newspapers and gazette zones. Text correction also allows for more accurate transcription downloads of the article text.
