Can we have simple primer on when we will and won't see WikiTree coding?

I think it would help to have in one place a simple primer on where in the system you can use regular WikiTree coding and have it appear in the code version and where you have to enter <nowiki> on everything so that the code shows in regular view. And maybe some reminders in important places like on the page when you compose a private message to someone. Very frustrating when I, as a mentor, forget I have to use <nowiki> everywhere in a private message or the mentee gets an email that shows them nothing.

I agree with you on this, as a Mentor also.  I usually just put quotes around the wording and tell them to enclose them in '<' and '>' before and after.  You don't need the 'nowiki' in G2G but you do in messages and comments left on profiles, I think.
I'm lost.  If this question is for everyone (rather than a Mentors Google Groups page, if they have one), can you give some examples of why you need to worry about a bunch of coding in a PM?
The problem is the consistency and trying to know when 'nowicki' is needed around sample code.

Send a private message to yourself for one of your profiles, give an example of how to create an inline citation using the ref tags, as an example. It doesnt look the same when you look at the copy of message sent to you and the intended person. Do the same thing as a comment on a profile page. Do the same in G2G. You have to remember which needs the 'nowicki'.  It isnt just mentors that could send a message to someone with embedded wiki code being used as an example.
Yes, Julie, this would be for everyone.

For example, if I type <ref>data</ref> in showing someone an example, in some parts of WikiTree all you will see at the receiving end is [1].  What should have been typed is <nowiki><ref>data</ref><nowiki> so that the person sees the code example instead of just [1].

Now, I have to add this comment to the thread so I can see whether what I intended above worked or not.  So, in this g2g forum I don't need to type <nowiki>, I can just enter the code and it will appear as what I am trying to show to someone. That's not the case in the PM system where it seems you must use the <nowiki> tags to show someone the code example (and they don't see the <nowiki> tags). It's confusing because it's inconsistent. Guess I need another post-it on the monitor.
Thank you.  Now I understand.  And I can see why you might want to send a message to a mentee that included the coding.

Not related to the opening post, but having been a party to a couple of MIRs, I would be very interested in understanding more about the process, and so would some of my WikiTree friends.  Is there some page that explains the process, and what each party--the complainer and the mentee--can expect?
It isnt just mentors, as i said. I send private messages to people when i am going data doctor suggestions and see soneone making same mistake with formatting on several profiles, ie links for template usage, links to wiki tree ids, many different things. Leaving a comment of profiles, i think, uses wiki code so you need the nowiki around things

Julie, I think this page will help explain the Mentor Intervention Request process. I should add it is important to go through the steps on this page before filing and MIR.

Thank you, T.  I've been through the process and have read those pages.  I should not have added an unrelated question to my comment.  Some time maybe I will make a separate post about how opaque the process is, but I'll save that for another day.

I did some tests, and this is what I experienced:

Wikicode / wiki markup will work on wiki pages such as profile pages, free space pages, category pages, etc.

Because comments are posted on wiki pages, templates will work in comments. Bracketed tags (such as <ref> and <nowiki>) are disabled for comments.

Bracketed tags are entirely stripped from private messages. Because private messages aren't part of a wiki page, the templates don't work.

If a private message is sent with a comment that includes a template, the bracketed tags included in the template are stripped, so you will just see the text of the template.

G2G is an entirely different software than the wiki part of WikiTree, so wiki markup does not work.

By "work" you mean that the markup works as coding, right?

And when it's at work as coding it does not "work" (=show) as text, OK?

It's almost as hard writing about as it's hard to understand and remember how it works cheeky

work = functions as designed where wiki markup is being used to format text on a mediawiki page

doesn't work = is treated as plain text (or as <html> tags in the case of private messages) because the wiki markup is not being used to format the text of a mediawiki page
I'm really confused. I just tried the standard Biography, Sources, references tag as a comment on my profile both with and without nowiki. Neither work in the comment on a profile?
Html tags are disabled in the comments so <nowiki> won't work.
Kay, for showing things such as == Sources == you need the entity number for the == to work.
