Curious news report that the remains of a clachan have been found in South Australia (reported by Australian Broadcasting Corporation  https://www.abc.net.au/news/2020-02-23/first-clachan-outside-of-ireland-found-in-kapunda/11982148).

I do not know the history of the migrants who created this settlement. The news report shows a photo of a clachan in County Antrim.

This is odd news. An historic form of Irish settlement (the clachan) has been verified by archeologists in South Australia. Many families migrated from County Clare around 1860. for reference this area was named Bakers Flat near Kapunda.

The following link gives more details:

I'm finding a bit more about the residents. Two were Driscoll's who were miners in the local copper mine at Kapunda. Other family names I've seen are Linnane and Jordon.

Fascinating - I have relatives living in early Kapunda but they mostly originated from either Somerset, England or Prussia!

Thanks Veronica. This was interesting to me because I had never heard of this type of traditional, communal Irish settlement.
