I asked this question in WikiTree Help over a month ago and got no answers, so maybe it's a WikiTree Tech question?
I tagged the question JEWISH ROOTS because I am working with names that were written in Yiddish or Polish before our ancestors came over to the U.S., but names in many other languages must get transliterated variously.
In the family I am working on, when Berko Meretsky came to America, his oldest son and daughter had already dropped the "sky" that made the name a patronymic in Polish, so they went by "Meyer" or "Myers." Two of his younger daughters used a different transliteration of the Polish, as Meretsky = Merecki. I use the other last name field, yes, but as we get a generation or two along that gets confusing. One thing that would help me is if the Geneaology pages for Meretsky and Merecki were merged as related surnames. I see on the Meyer page "About 12822 MEYERs. Related surnames: MYERS (18065) MAYER (4048) MEYERS (3452) MOYER (3178) MAJOR (2888) MEIER (2144) MAIER (1419) MEIJER (1191) MYER (663) MOYERS (495) MAYR (471) MAYERS (336) MIRE (337) DEMEYER (343) MEISER (270)." Can that be done for other surnames?
