The England Project is an exciting place to be at the moment! We have a few hundred active members improving and creating English Profiles. We have a strong sense of community, and a team structure where members work in their areas of interest. Amongst our activities we connect, source, and improve bios within our County Teams, we correct data errors, improve old Gedcom profiles, and encourage One-name and One-place studies.

Does this sound like something you would like to be part of?

Your England Project membership will begin with our unique Orphan Trail team (OT) which should take less than a month to complete. The OT helps you learn about building and formatting English profiles using English sources right back to 1700. It will empower you to research your own English ancestors!

Read all about it here.

We do ask that you make the OT a priority in your Wikitreeing activity to be able to complete it in a timely manner. If you know you won't be able to give it your full attention now, please apply to join the England Project at a more suitable time for you.

During the OT, we get to learn more about you and what your interests are. Once you have finished the OT you will join one of our other teams and make connections with members who share your own interests.

PLEASE NOTE: if you are just looking for help with specific ancestors in England, and don't wish to take the Orphan Trail and become active in the England Project, then post a message in G2G tagged ENGLAND and one of our helpful England Project Helpdesk team members will try to assist you :)

If you want to join us, please ANSWER below this post (not comment, or we may miss you!). Also please DO NOT put your email address in your answer - it attracts spammers! I will respond with joining instructions and get you into our England Project Google Group, which is how we all communicate.

Thank you!

Hi

My name is Julia Harris, and I have ancestors going back to pre 1700.  I would like to understand more about them, and in order to do so, I need to understand more than I do.  I am currently unemployed and therefore have time to devote to helping the project move along, which in turn will educate me to better understand this environment.
Hi Julia!

Thank you for your interest in the England Project! I am sending you a private message with instructions for getting started.

My known ancestors are English and I am recently Pre-1700 Certified.

Hello, I am interested in joining the England Project and look forward to following the Orphan Trail. I have already been tracing family in several areas of England but more recently  in Cumbria. I hope to hear soon from a Trailblazer. Thank you.

Hello. I am interested in joining the project. I am English, from Kent, and have a strong interest in my country of birth and its history and of genealogy, though I'm not an expert by any means. My mother's family were quite good at ensuring that my generation in the family knew as much as they did of their history, and I've enjoyed trying to fill in the gaps, and making many discoveries which my mother would find very interesting.

Reading through the description for the work of the Project I believe that I could do the work. I'm usually quite good at ferreting out information, and even better with good appropriate guidance when needed. Even though I'm in my early 80s I don't feel fazed about attempting to do this. I was doing some Indexing on FamilySearch for a while when I had time on my hands; I see projects like this as needing some similar approaches. There's no suitable Indexing available at this time, and I know it would give me a deeper understanding of the genealogical process. Old age has been no barrier to me learning new skills!

I believe that my knowledge and understanding English-British history/society/geography/language would be helpful. Even though I've been in the Antipodes for the past few decades, the distance has been advantageous to me gaining more insights and understandings of what I left behind as an already mature adult.

Thanks for reading this.

Hi Kate,

Age is no barrier to learning! And the Antipodes is a very nice place to be (although I might be biased). We have project members from all over the world :)

Hello Fran, I would like to join the England project, please.  I am managing more the 70 English pre-1800 profiles. I have had the pre 1700 Certified badge since Sep 2018 and I am now begining to find many pre 1700 connections, particularly the family of Clifford-4130 (my 6th gt grandfather).  I am the project leader of the Orme One Name Study. I would like to be able to collaborate with other team members, particularly on the older profiles.

I am a descendant of the Beresford Family. I have managed to trace my Beresford line back to a Hugh De Beueresforde about 1227? As a member of the Beresford Family Society who are rich in information, but I am interested in the England project for several reasons, A. where does my family name originate and, B. with so many ancestral connections to various families of nobility, how does it all come together? Would love to know more about the involvement and the requirements to become a member.

by David Beresford G2G Crew (590 points)

Hi David,

I have Beresford ancestors too! Although mine are spelt with a double "r" (i.e. Berresford).

You can read more about the England Project, including the requirements for membership, on our project page here.

Let me know if you would like to join and I will send you instructions on how to get started.

Ian, Membership Coordinator, England Project

Hi Ian, I have read through the information, and although I still do not quite understand the requirements I would like to take part in the England project. As I said if it will help me find answers and in doing so it will help others then that's a challenge I would like to take.

Regards David

Hi Fran: My whole family is English, both sides (although I was born in Canada). I'd be interested in joining the project, but I have to admit I don't have a lot of time to spend on Wikitree right now, so I will leave it to you to decide!

Thanks, Susan Mellor

Hi,

I'm really new on Wikitree, although I've been on Ancestry, FamilySearch and FindmyPast for many years. I live in Kent, and my ancestry is almost entirely English, split between Sheffield (my paternal line) and London and Southern Counties (maternal line).
I am very interested in learning to format sources and biographies correctly on WikiTree and make a contribution here. I would like to join the England Project and the Orphan Trail
Kind regards

Maureen

Hi Steve!

Thanks. I haven't noticed anything yet. Do the private messages come via Wikitree or E-mail?
Hi Steve, I sent it on 15 June, It will come via email to the email address you use for your WikiTree login. The email will be from WikiTree and have the subject "England Project". If it hasn't arrived, please let me know and I will send it again.

Ian
Thanks Ian,
the e-mail address in Wikitree is correct. I should have a received this but can't find it. Maybe I accidentally deleted it.
Yes, please send it again.

Or is this the first test to pass the trail?
Hi Steve, I've just re-sent it, so it should be in your inbox now!

Ian
Houston, we have a problem.

Your e-mail should be in my inbox but isn't. (and it wasn't diverted to junk mail).
Thanks Steve. I've just forwarded the message to your email.

WikiTree discourages publicly posting email addresses, so it's probably a good idea to edit your message to remove it. I've got it now. (You can edit your message by clicking the "edit" button on the right side of your message.)

Ian

Still some sort of problem - I haven't seen your e-mail.

I had intended to delete my e-mail address as quickly as possible - done.

I don't think I've got any exceptional firewall setting in action. Do you have another member of the team that can try sending me this message?

Regards, Steve.

Please ignore the previous comments. Your last message has just come through. Late better than never. I have no idea what happened before to your first 2 messages. I haven't seen anything like this problem before.

Fantastic Steve! Hopefully it will all go smoothly from here on. I have just replied to your email and also sent you an invitation to the England Project's Google Group. So you have both of those in your inbox (or receive them shortly).

I just found news artical on one of my ancestors. I added it to her profile it gives her husband name.   https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Nixon-2925

Billie

by Billie Keaffaber G2G6 Mach 4 (41.3k points)

Thanks Billie! You might want to check that you've connected the correct profile as her husband. Potts-4360 died 17 years before the date of marriage and, if he had been alive, would have been 98 years old.

You will find some useful guidance on sources for these older profiles in our page Reliable sources for pre-1700 profiles in England.

How can she (Mary Potts) have died in 1776, if she was buried in 1728?

Melanie,

I know dates are off these profiles work in progress I just was given artical by family member. If you read article you will see lines. I have to figure out the dates on these people I have some information that been changed. I put some what I know on them I have to add more later. There marriage record is listed please look in photos.

I would love to join this project. I descend from fairly recent english immigrants who came to the US in the mid-to-late 19th century on both sides of my family. I have had fun using sites such as FamilySearch to help find records. And I would love to expand my reach and knowledge in the English genealogical world.

I am interested in joining the project team to learn more about how to use wikitree. I would like to develop the skills, knowledge and experience required and do a good job on my family's own ancestors' profiles and the profiles of their extended families and others within the communities in which they lived.

Thanks for your message Rosalie :)

Did you receive the private message I sent you on 24 June about how to get started, or have I missed your reply? I can send it again if you didn't receive it.
