Looking for Strickland who married Maria Jane Sanford
+4

Legend is he was murdered returning home to the south after fighting for the north during the Civil War. Only name I've been able to find that matches that story is a James R Strickland but he was married to an Amanda Denton. This unknown Strickland and Maria Jane Sanford had one child named Benjamin Bryson Strickland who was born in 1863. I did see a James K Strickland (Stricklin) who served with Maria Jane's brother William Henry Sanford in a Union Alabama Calvary unit. Strickland and Maria Jane were supposedly married in Alabama but I have been unable to locate any document.

Yes that is them. They later moved to Arkansas to live with Maria's brother William Henry. I believe he lost a leg in the war and needed some help. The Strickland I am looking for is Maria's husband and Bryson's father.
I have been looking at all the information I could and can't find a husband for Maria Jane. I'll keep trying.
Betty
Thank you Betty I do appreciate your help.

All of these are first regiment names. Maybe one of these is relevant. If not, you can visit the website and see if you can find the right Strickland.
Betty
Thank you Betty. Short of finding the marriage document or DNA testing it may be impossible to tell who it is. I now have some further info... First name was supposedly James and he has several brothers some of which fought for the north and some for the south. He may have been a musician because there is a picture of him with a fiddle. Picture is in the mail to me now. Who knows, the story of him being killed on his way home from the war may have been just a story to cover up an embarrassing situation and this mysterious Strickland really didn't exist.
On a family group sheet from the owner of the above mention website I find this:
F Maria Jane Sanford
Birth 29 Apr 1830 ,, Georgia
Death Spouse USV soldier, CW of GA Thomas Strickland ( - )
