Profile manager needs help with merge, please

Question

In May, last year, a message was left on the profile to let the profile manager know that Elizabeth Douglas was not the daughter of John Douglas.  Baptismal records were provided in the form of a comment.  

The profile manager responded by asking that a merge be performed.  Almost a year has passed, so yesterday, I proposed a merge, which the profile manager rejected with the comment "father needs to be resolved."

I don't know whether to just remove the father connected with this profile, and reschedule the merge, or not.  I am going to tag the merge team or arborists to take a look, please.

The same person was PM on the duplicate father profiles.  When I reviewed them, the merge of them was approved and I was able to complete it.  I've now moved the merge of the duplicate Elizabeths from an unmerged match to re-proposing the merge of the duplicate profiles.

The old note on the profile for Elizabeth says her father is John Robert Douglas. The father for one profile is John and the other has Robert, which leads me to believe the fathers are not incorrect, just using only one of his names.  John has no other family, besides the duplicate children.  I would propose merge of John and Robert, pointing to the comment on Elizabeth.  Then propose merges for all the other duplicate children.
