Emigrants from Sweden that will become imigrants somwhere.

All the time during my genealogy work I find people who emigrates, mostly to North America, United States or Canada but also some other countries like Germany, Denmark, France, Australia and Norway and others. As I think there are no or bad tools for that on Wikitree I will here, during time announce all the people I found that's leaving Sweden.

I will put every new person/family in a new answer and only make one link to familys, mostly the fathers.

This is made because I will not for now put a lot of energy in searching in other countries than Sweden.

Others who wants are invited to try to carry on where I leave them. Maybe somebody looking for their ancestors in the "old" country will find something useful here.

If somebody else will "dump" their emigrants from Sweden here they are welcome to do that also.

Thank you Ola, I will provide an answer with my Swedish Bryngelsson and Andersdottir line later today. I am in contact with my Swedish cousin from this family line who sent me the vital records and nice genealogy charts. :-)
I have an immigrant to the US born in Linköping, Sweden.  His name is Axel Ahlsen, father was Harold Ahlsen, mother was Hilda Lof.  I have a problem with them because Axel was born about 1868 and I thought patronymics were in use at that time, plus the name Ahlsen doesn't seem Swedish.  Axel appears to have had one known sister, Thura.

I have not yet been able to find his emigration (nor, in fact, his immigration).  I know he married in February 1892 in Illinois, so he emigrated/immigrated prior to 1892.  I have no idea how to find him in Swedish records.

Melanie, I think this should be Axel August, born in Ålvestad parish 23 February 1868 to the grenadier Alfred Johansson Harald and his wife Hilda Margaretha Eriksdotter Löf. From 1869 the family lived in the parish Ljung. These are parishes in Östergötland county, where Linköping is the county capital.

Axel August Harald was a tailor's apprentice in Fornåsa parish (also Östergötland) when he emigrated to N. Amerika 10 August 1888. (The same date has also been filled in in the column for deaths - I think that must be absentmindedness).

https://sok.riksarkivet.se/bildvisning/C0015611_00014

I found them here, by searching for Axel born about 1868 with a mother whose last name was Löf. This family was the only hit from Östergötland.

Didn't even notice that he had a father named Harold - although here (strangely) it is a surname (but soldier names are often strange). Sister Thura may have been brother Thure?

Where he got Ahlsen from is a riddle, but strange name changes upon emigration also happen.

Eva, I love you!  <3 <3

So, it's correctly Löf, not Lof.  I can fix that.

Yeah, the supposed sister could very easily be a brother.

Ahlsen always seemed more Danish than Swedish, so I have been questioning it since forever.  (His descendants, however, refuse to think it anything else!)

He died in 1937, in Illinois, and a great-whatever number- grandson asked me if I could find anything for the family.
Would the Harold possibly be rendered "Herved"?  The son-in-law of Axel was the informant for the death certificate and that's the name he gave for Axel's father.  For the mother he reported "Margaret Herved".
Could Thure be Ture?  Asking because they look similar to me (but what would I know .. I thought Ola was a female name!) and Thure (written as Thura) was in Chicago in 1910, but I cannot tell if Ture ever left Sweden.  FS has Ture as Ture Frithiof Haraldsson, married with a bunch of kids.  The household books as per FS have Ture resident 1892-1896, 1901-1905, 1906-1911, 1912-1920, which would seem to show he was there in 1910.   Ture was supposedly born 1870, while the Illinois census has Thura born about 1871.

(Sorry for all the questions.  My brain is rather fried from looking for my gr-grand Smith in England, plus helping sort out a name-alike situation in Queensland.  I think I need some sleep.)

The h in Thure is just a mute decoration in Swedish.
And census records are very often off by a year - you know that.

Ahlsen when thought of as "son of Ahl" does sound Danish because of the -sen, but could very well be the Swedish Ahlsén with emphasis on the second syllable (35 hits in the 1880 census, mostly Alsén without an h, 1100 hits on birthday.se with all kinds of spellings, like Alcén). The riddle is where he got it from.

As for Margaret Herved - after so long time in America anything can happen to Swedish names. At least she is Margaret and not Christine or something.

As for Margaret Herved - after so long time in America anything can happen to Swedish names. At least she is Margaret and not Christine or something.

.

Now that had me laugh aloud! laugh

So, you think the 1870 and 1871 Ture / Thure are likely the same person?

I forget how to find the leaving book .. and am not sure I could read it anyway.  I need a step back to when we were looking for Ola/Ole Waldemarsson, to see if I can find out if Ture did journey to the US in the early1900s, or if FS has the wrong family connections.  And if he was in the one in Illinois in 1910, why is he in the book with the family?!  surprise

Riddles.  I still don't know where Ola/Ole was while in the US, or when he left, or where he got the name Williamson.  Ahlsen can't be any worse!  cheeky

Do you have a profile for Axel? Or somebody else in that set?
Oh, an I don't find a change fro Waldemarsson to Williamson all that strange, when a person wants to fit in.
No profile, yet, for Axel, because he's a couple of generations higher than I am ready for.  (It's his granddaughter I'm almost ready to add.)

I could create him as a stand alone and build down, I suppose.
Yes, why not give him a standalone to start with. I could "play" a little with the family.

I  just found this for Ture Fritiof Haraldsson, born 1870-07-30:

https://sok.riksarkivet.se/bildvisning/F0006925_00213

There is a note to the far right that he spent 1907 to 1913 in America. So he went back to Sweden.
BTW, we should perhaps start a separate question for this. When there is a profile for Axel, perhaps?

blush  I never expected the responses to get so long!  blush

Profile created.  (Now I can go up, or down.)

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Haraldsson-279

I should add the immigration category, right?

Tack.  :)

Lars Andersson leaves Sweden for United States, with his wife Catrina Johnsdotter and their two daughters Amanda Christina and Mathilda. They arrive at New York in summer 1852 with the ship Swea.

Be aware that the daughters last name att arrival are Johnsdotter, they should rather be named Larsdotter but they can also be named Anderson after arrival

by Ola Lidén G2G6 Mach 1 (10.3k points)
Yes, the whole family will probably be Anderson in America - unless they adopted a more distinctive surname.

I looked at the image of the ship manifest; those were written by staff on the ships, I suppose. The daughters do not have any surnames written out - it's just the transcriber who has chosen to repeat the name closest above.
I added the category "Sweden, Emigrants" to Lars Anderssons profile for now.

That is also something you can do so people who want to work on these profiles might have easier to find them.

This is really not correct category, it is not supposed to have profiles since it is a top-level category, but for now it will have to do until we can get some answers from the categorisation project on how to proceed with the Swedish migration structure.
Thanks I will use that category

Thanks for the answer, the name is ok but immigration 1880??? Victorinus leaves Sweden in 1893, and sister Hanna???? Victorinus has no sister with the name Hanna as I know. I can't say that it's not him but it's to much gambling to say that it's him. I want much more likely facts and clues to take that as the right man.
Yup, probably not.  There are several different Victor Pearsons in Familysearch records. And that might not be his Americanized name...just a guess.
I did check and probably I had missed a source but I just added one last source where the note that Victorinus is emigrating can be seen.

The thing is, I can see that there are to many guesses in a lot of family trees and therefore also a lot of faulty connections. And specially when the us-sources where the names can vary from source to source, also the birth year can vary a lot up and down. I don't like it and that's one reason I don't want to go on myself researching the emigrants when they have left Sweden.

But if somebody are there i the US and have ancestors from Sweden there can be enough personal knowledge about old places and/or names of parents, grandparents and so on to find matches with the ones I leave on the "border" or slightly after. And also if you are living in US you probably have better knowledge of using the US- sources. That's why I do this and announce them here, I will not personally go on with them except maybe in rare cases. I would be glad  if I can help just one to find there ancestors this way.
