Pre-1500: Pls add Gifford-40 to Giffard-639

Pls. could someone with Pre-1500 certification add Gifford-40 (Thomas Gifford 1460-1511) and Langston-4 (Joan Langston) to the profile of Giffard-639 (Thomas Giffard 1481-1550) as his parents. All profiles are well sourced.

Also, pls add the birth year of Giffard-639 which is about 1481, based on the source which indicates that he was abt. 30 when his father died in 1511.

Giffard line needs pruning and organizing

At present we have Elias Giffard +bef 1248 with two daughters, Maud and Matilda, one of whom marries the other's grandson. As both women marry Godfreys and have sons Peter, the one surnamed Bolbec probably got confused with the other and became attached to the same parents. It's certain that Alice Bavent was Maud's granddaughter as per the ipm of her cousin of the half blood, John Giffard, taken in 1327 and that Matilda married the Godfrey who was sheriff of Wilts in 1258.

I'm suggesting amputating Maud from the Giffard family. Given the duplication of Godfreys and Peters, it's possible that there never were two Godfreys and Peters, but it's hard to say. In any case if both Godfreys married Mauds, the latter women could not have been sisters.

British history online has a Godfrey Scudamore "probably dead by 1190" succeeded by a Peter (son or other relation?) who was succeeded by a Godfrey (again no specified relationship) who held it to at least 1262. This would appear to be Matilda's Godfrey, but was he the same as the earlier Godfrey or a different one? Then there's a son Peter succeeding by 1267. But the succession was not necessarily a straightforward father to son to grandson one as the lands were forfeited, reallocated, and reinstated at various times so more data would be helpful to sort out the relationships.

p.p1 {margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 11.0px 'Lucida Grande'}

Can a name be updated in the pre 1400 era.

1st Earl, Lord Walter Giffard was born as Gauthier Giffard.. his father was Osbern de Bolbec. I found many links on Geni.com saying that Rohese Giffard's father was Gauthier. Not one site had him as Walter.

By searching I found that they are actually one in the same.
I'm adding info for the cemetery St Hieritha's Church Burial Ground, Chittlehampton, Devon. I have photos and some info for the profile of Roger Giffard. If someone could please add the tags for the following categories:

Category: St Hieritha's Church Burial Ground, Chittlehampton, Devon

Category: Chittlehampton, Devon

also the following info:

Giffard Chapel - St Hieritha's Church, Chittlehampton, Devon, England
The imposing monument on the North wall was erected 3 years after the death of John Giffard(d.1622) whose effigy is the large recumbent figure. The monument commemorates 5 generations of Giffards. John's grandfather (Sir Roger, d.1547) is commemorated by the medallion on the left. Roger married Margaret Coblegh of Brighley. Their son John(d.1585) is commemorated by the medallion on the right.
This John married Mary Grenville and it is their son John in whose memory the monument is erected. Their son Arthur married Agnes Leigh of Northam, but died in 1616. As a result their son John inherited the estate.
Arthur is the kneeling figure on the left and his son John(who erected the monument) is the kneeling figure on the right.

Also the sources: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brightley,_Chittlehampton
Need help! Jeffords Family dead-end.

My ancestor [[Jefferds-Jeffords-1|Ann Hopeful Jeffords Davis]] has been linked to father Nathan Jr. in Rush, NY but I can find no birth records for such. She may in fact be a "Gifford", or a daughter of "Obadiah Jefferds and Rebecca Fox" in Ohio, New York, according to one suspect source [https://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=wu.89066038845;view=1up;seq=11]. The 1855 New York Census for Ann Hopeful Davis indicates a niece "Harriet Jefford" living with the family. That gives me hope that the Jefford surname and family connection is legit, but I am stuck trying to find Hopeful's parents from original or official, verifiable sources. The surname is spelled at least 6 different ways, which make it hard to find her. Thanks!

Gunnor and her sisters

Supposed to have unknown parents, but you'd never think it.

Apparently Duke Richard was out one day and took a fancy to a passing noble lady called Senfrie, but she was married, so he asked her if she had a sister, as you do, and she had, and the rest is history, even if that bit wasn't.

These people all have duplicates waiting to be despatched the WikiTree way.

But this Wikipedia page reckons Osbern was the son of one of Gunnor's sisters (names are confused) and I'm having trouble with the dates on that.

Proposed changes for a domesday generation figure

I request feedback on two suggestions for the profile of the man who was the paternal grandfather of William Marshall "the Marshall" (a Magna Carta surety baron and known as the "perfect knight"). As far as I can see, unless there are sources I am not aware of, these changes are logical and straightforward but on the other hand I know some people will feel strongly about this family, which is a prized ancestry for many.

1. Gilbert's last name at birth should be changed to Giffard. Actually people did not normally have last names at birth then but in terms of ANY type of second name, no primary or secondary source I am aware of calls him "Fitz Geoffrey". Giffard is the only second name I think he is known by. Fitz Geoffrey is apparently someone modern's way of enforcing a theory about who his father was because it simply means "Fitz Geoffrey" but we do not know who his father was.

2. He should be disconnected from the father we have for him. There are publications which speculate about who Gilbert was related to, but these are always presented as speculative speculations, not relationships which are just a bit imperfectly proven. I think this level of speculation should be mentioned in the text, but not presented as any kind of widely approved relationship?

Of course if anyone has published sources to justify another approach that would be very interesting, but as far as I know this is a question which the best historians and genealogists of this period have specifically ruled on and described what we do NOT know. Should we ignore them?
