Widney was originally written Udny, which in Scots is pronounced Widney. The Widneys are believed by many to be Dutch but actually have their origins in Scotland. Capt. Oliver Udny commanded a company of soldiers in the Scots Brigade in service of The United Netherlands [aka Holland] and subsequently held land in County Cavan, Ireland. The Widneys later lived in Killymurry, County Monaghan, less than two miles outside County Tyrone, Ireland. [edit]
