Biography

Peter Abbott was born on 27 July 1701 in Andover, Essex County, Massachusetts to George Abbott and Elizabeth Ballard. [1]
Peter Abbott died aged 83 on 26 April 1785 in Brookfield, Worcester County, Massachusetts, and was buried in Worcester County, Massachusetts, United States of America, [2] but exact details are unknown.
His will was dated April 27, 1774, and proved April 26, 1785, his eldest son Joel being the executor. In his will, Peter Abbott bequeaths to beloved son Joel Abbott all the estate both real and personal. Sons Nathan, Jesse, and Joshua each receives £20. Daughters Lydia, Prudence, and Sarah each receives £15. Daughter Elizabeth receives 40 shillings as considerable has been done for her. Joel was named executor. Those heirs signing approval of the will were Joshua Abbott, Nathan Abbott, and Lydia Danforth.[3]

Peter Abbott was a farmer and lived in Brookfield, Massachusetts, where, on November 13, 1725, he bought eighty acres of land on the south side of the Quaboag river.
Peter fought in the Revolutionary War from the third precinct in Brookfield, June 30, 1778. [1]
He served in the colonial wars, with the following record: Private, July 17,1722, Colonel Shadrach Walton's command; private, November 22, 1724, in Colonel Thomas Westbrook's command.

Peter married Lydia (Gilbert) 1730 Brookfield, Worcester, Massachusetts, United States.

The Brookfield records show that a Peter Abbott married Rachel Stevens (1706-1785) on 1 November 1759 in Brookfield, Worcester County, Massachusetts, and, as there was no other Peter there at the time, this was probably his second marriage. [1]

Research Notes

DAR does not recognize the service of Peter Abbott anymore, although they did before. [16]

There is no evidence that Peter Abbott married Elizabeth Belding before 1730. [citation needed]

Notes from Descendants [1] show a marriage to Lydia Gilbert in 1830 and to Rachel Stevens in 1759.

Patricia Abbott
I am wondering about the source for the information that Peter Abbott was first married to Elizabeth Belding. Is there any documentation of this? Elizabeth Belding was the name of Lydia Gilbert's (the first wife for whom there is documentation) grandmother. Lemuel Abbott's book on the Descendants of George Abbott of Rowley does not give a marriage to Elizabeth Belding.
