Biography

Matthew Floyd Ackroyd is born on March 27, 1883 in Toronto Gore Township, Peel County, Ontario, Canada. He is the son of Joseph Ackroyd (1851-1921) and Martha Nix (1853-1940).

He is in the 1891 census at the age of eight living with his family in Chinguacousy Township, the next township to the west of Toronto Gore. In the 1901 census he is still living with his family in Chinguacousy and, at the age of 18, he is now a farm labourer earning $100 a year. He is actually shown twice in the 1901 census, once living in the household of his parents and once living in the household of his older, married sister, Martha Sanderson. In both cases his occupation is described as a farm labourer.

Matthew marries Ethel May Mashinter (1885-1963) on March 12, 1904 in Toronto Junction (now a part of the city of Toronto). The wedding record shows Matthew’s occupation as a farmer. However he leaves the farm at some point fairly soon after the wedding as the birth records of the two children – 1904 and 1908 – show him living first in Etobicoke and then in Toronto. One of these records shows his occupation as a teamster.

Matthew dies on April 3, 1919 in the Grace Hospital in Toronto. The cause is peritonitis and shock. Peritonitis is an inflammation of the tissue that lines the inner wall of the abdomen. He is buried in the Riverside Cemetery in Toronto. Ethel re-marries -- Francis William Hale (1881-1936) -- and she lives on until 1963. She, too, is buried in the Riverside Cemetery.

Matthew and Ethel have two children:

  • Violet Alberta Ackroyd (1904-1987) + (1923) John Bunting (1901-1975)
  • Harold Floyd Ackroyd (1908-1991) + (1939) Dorothy Eleanor Watson (1918-1988)
