Biography

Francis (“Frank”) Staniland Ackroyd is born on March 24, 1880, in Toronto Gore Township, Peel County, Ontario, Canada [1]. He is the son of Joseph Ackroyd (1851-1921) and Martha Nix (1853-1940). His middle name, Staniland, is the maiden name of his paternal grandmother.

Francis is 11 months old in the 1881 census living with this family in Chinguacousy Township, the next township to the west of Toronto Gore [2]. Today, the southern half of Chinguacousy is part of the city of Brampton. He is 10 years old in the 1891 census and he is 20 years old in the 1901 census [3][4]. In the 1901 census he is shown to be an agricultural labourer earning $135 a year.

On December 30, 1902, Francis marries Margaret Ellen Bingham in Chinguacousy [5]. Francis and Margaret have three children. None live beyond childhood:

• Wilbert Edward Ackroyd 1903-1903

• Joseph James Ackroyd 1905-1905

• Wilfred Clarence Ackroyd 1907-1918

In the 1911 census records, Francis is living with Margaret and one child in Brampton [6]. He is a farm worker and in 1910 he made $500. In the 1921 census records, Francis and Margaret are still in Brampton and Francis is now a manager making $1,500 a year [7]. There are five other people living in the house, some of whom are relatives. Francis and Margaret, now in their fifties, are living in Brampton in the 1931 census records [8]. Francis is a farm manager, earning $1,500 a year.

Margaret dies in 1961 and is buried in the Brampton Cemetery. Francis dies in 1967 and, he is buried with her plus all three of his children [9].
