John was born about 1824 in Georgia^[1][2] to Nathaniel Acree and Elizabeth O'Neal.

He served as a private in company F, 23rd Regiment, Alabama Infantry of the Confederate States Army during the Civil War.^[3][4]

He married Mary Elizabeth Schoffield on 04 Sep 1845 in Lowndes County, Alabama,^[5][1][2] and the couple had the following known children:
