Biography

Francis H. J. "Frank" Acree was born about 1830 in Georgia.[1]

He married Elizabeth Cox on 08 Nov 1854 in Montgomery County, Alabama[2] and the couple had the following known children:

  1. W. F. Acree was born about 1855 in Alabama.[1]
  2. C. S. Acree was born about 1857 in Alabama.[1]
  3. S. F. Acree was born about 1859 in Alabama.[1]
  4. Jefferson Davis Acree was born 21 Jun 1862 in Alabama and died 14 Apr 1938 in Sherman, Grayson County, Texas.[3]


Slave Ownership: 1860 US Slave Census, Lowndes County, Alabama indicates, F.H.J. Acree owned one 27 year old Black male. His father, Nathaniel Acree, owned one 65 year old Black female and one 30 year old Black female.[4]

Military: "Name: Frank Acree Military Unit: 1st Alabama Infantry Regiment Military Unit - Company: C* Muster Roll Date: 03 Mar 1865 Rank: Private Place of Enlistment - County: Lowndes Place of Enlistment - State: Alabama Roll #: 6 Archive Collection #: SG025006-6." The original text states that he was assigned as a nurse in the 'Genl' Hospital. *Note: transcription states Company C, however, original text is 1st Regiment, Alabama Volunteers, Company "K".[5][6][7][8]

HIghlights of his Civil War activities appear on Fold 3 in the compiled service record for F H Acree, 1st Alabama, June 23, 1864, issued clothing. Feb. 1864 pay receipt lists his occupation as carriage builder. The General Hospital in which he was first assigned was near Pensacola, Fla. under the command of General Bragg. Some records are faint, but he was also detached to Selma, Alabama, and Meridian, Mississippi under command of General Johnston. He had a furlough to his residence and re-enlisted Jan'y, 1862. He was captured at Port Hudson, Louisiana, July 9, 1863, and paroled July 12-13, 1863. He was a patient at Ladies Hospital, Montgomery, Alabama, November 15, 1864. [1].
