Biography

There were several men named Jesse Adkins. The subject of this profile was born in VA and came to live in Kentucky. Another Jesse was born in NC and resided in Winston Co., Alabama and a third Jesse was born and in Tennessee and resided in Fentress Co., TN.

The Jesse Adkins, who lived in Pike and Elliott County, Kentucky, birth has been estimated from census records. The 1850 census of Pike Co KY shows Jessee Adkins was age 35, b VA. and living next door to Winwright Adkins age 75 b VA and his wife Sarah age 70, b NC.[1] In 1860 the census for Pike County, Kentucky shows Jesse Adkins was age 54, b VA and living next door to Elisha Adkins age 52.[2] His age in 1870 was 66 and he was living in Elliott Co KY. [3] Jesse was 78 in the 1880 census and resided at Devil's Fork in Elliott County, Kentucky. [4]

There are two marriage records for Jesse.

1. He married first Elizabeth Hopkins on 4 September 1834 in Pike County, Kentucky.[5]
2. He married second Elizabeth Boner on 5 August 1838 in Pike County, Kentucky.[6] Ancestry's U.S. and International Marriage Records, 1560-1900 list a marriage for Jesse and Elizabeth Boner in 1831 and Jesse and Elizabeth Boney in 1838. There seems to be some confusion between Boney and Boner. We do not know if it is a simple mistake of difference in spelling or because of the different dates it is an indication of two different marriages and two different families.

Jesse and his family resided in Pike County, Kentucky in 1860.[7]

He died after 1880 when he is found living at Devil's Fork in Elliott County, Kentucky with his family. Cause of death was reportedly Typhoid. [9]
