Alfred Annison Swafford born in 1814 in Bledsoe County Tennessee. He first married Nancy Ahl She was born 9/13/1813 in Virginia, the daughter of Benjamin Ahl 3/15/1786 - 6/26/1866 and Lucy Sweeney 9/9/1788 - 3/4/1857. A widely spoken of family legend indicates that Nancy Ahl was a full blooded Cherokee Indian and Alfred married her off the Trail of Tears. History records indicate that the Cherokees were removed from southeastern Tennessee by the federal government in I836 to a reservation in Oklahoma. Alfred and Nancy apparently married about I833 because their first child was born in 1834. Alfred and Nancy were listed in the 1840-50-60 McMinn County, Tennessee census. Alfred's mother, Sarah age 78, and David Brown age 45, were listed at their home in the 1850 census.
Conflict
According to a narrative description of court cases copied from "Chancery Court Records of McMinn County, Tennessee by Reba Bayless Boyer, 1980; A.J. Standifer was cousin to Portman Swafford and brother-in-law to Alfred Swafford Senior. This would make their wives, Nancy Ahl Swafford and Mary Sweeney Swafford sisters. Notice as well that Nancy's mother, also has a middle name of Sweeney.[1]
