Biography

Olive Alma Aiken was born in Glen Sutton in 1854[1]. She was the daughter of Samuel Aiken and Sophronia Adams. She was the 13th child of Samuel Aiken but the only child with his second wife Sophronia. She was known commonly as "Alma".

On 4 Jan. 1876, Alma married Francis (Frank) Edward Jones, at St. Armand Baptist Church[2], Frank was born 10 Apr 1852, the son of Joseph Jones and Mehitable Jane Brock. Frank and Alma were third cousins, both being descendants of Hugh Miller.

Alma and Frank were living in Glen Sutton in the township of Sutton on the 1881 and 1891 censuses, and this is where their children were born:

  1. Irving Leon, b. Sept. 1880, m. Effie M. Brown, residing Passumpsic, Vt., d. 25 Aug. 1963
  2. Victor D. b. 24 Sept. 1883; d. 13 Jan. 1884
  3. Edwin Victor b. 22 Dec. 1887; m. Mabelle Carr; residing Derby, Vt., d. 25 Sept. 1959, and
  4. Bernice Saphronia b. abt. 1890; m. Fred H. Coburn, residing Newport, Vt., d. 9 June 1958.

On the 1881 Census, Alma and Frank are living with their very young first son, as well as an 8-yr old "Lilly Jones" unidentified[3]. On the 1891 census[4], Alma and Frank are living with their children Ervin, Edwin and Bernice, as well as Alma's widowed mother Sophronia.

The couple moved to North Troy, Vermont in 1905 (per the 1910 census). This is where they were living in 1910, with their 20-year old daughter Bernice[5].

Alma lost her husband in 1914, as evident from the following news items:

"Sutton. Mr. Frank E. Jones had a paralytic stroke near the week end at his home in North Troy, Vermont. His condition is reported serious. Mr. Jones was formerly from Glen Sutton, and is one of the most highly respected citizens of this section"[6].

Frank's death in North Troy, Vermont on 2 Oct. 1914 was reported both by the Richford Gazette[7] and by the Sherbrooke Daily Record as follows:

"North Troy, Oct. 7th. Frank E. Jones died at his home here on Friday October 2nd, aged 62 years, the funeral taking place at the house on Sunday, Rev. Mr. Miller officiating assisted by Rev. John Champion of Sutton, Que. The late Mr. Jones was born at Glen Sutton, Que., on April 10th, a son of the late Joseph Jones of that place and the body was taken there for burial. The bearers were Messrs. W. B. Jones, C. J. Jones, and Henry Brock of Glen Sutton, Que. and S. Jones of Potton. Three of the bearers were brothers of the diseased; and the other brother Charles M. Jones was in New York City at the time of his brother's death and could not be reached. Mr. Jones' wife, who survives him, was Alma Aiken, daughter of Samuel Aiken of Glen Sutton, Que. One daughter Mrs. F. H. Coburn lives in Newport, Vt. The sons are Erwin Jones of Lowell, Mass., and Edwin Jones of Newport, Vt."[8]

Alma passed away in Newport, Vermont in 1935 at the age of 81[9]. Both Alma and Frank were interred in Brock Memorial Cemetery in Glen Sutton[10]. The following notice appeared in the Newport Palladium & News:[11]
