Edgar Osgood Aiken was born in 1864, the third the son of Frederick Aiken and Celia Learned. The birth date is listed in the death record referenced below. His youth was spent on the farm in West Potton, until his father moved the family to Glen Sutton, near the original Aiken homestead, when Edgar was 15.
In 1871, Edgar appeared on the census with his parents and 5 siblings.[1] Since they had moved as mentioned in 1879, the family appeared on the 1881 census for Glen Sutton, which listed Edgar with his parents and 5 siblings (2 siblings had died in 1873).[2]
On 30 October 1888, Edgar married Aurilla Martha Green, in Richford, Vt.[3][4] Aurilla was the daughter of William and Delia Green.[5] According to the Marriage Record, Edgar was farming in nearby Bolton, Que. at his time of marriage. But they soon settled in Potton next to his brother Martin.[6] The 1892 Eastern Townships Directory lists "Edgar O Aiken" as "owner" of Range 4 Lot 22 in Potton, alongside "F.L. Aiken, M.L. AIken and T.R. Aiken (his father and two brothers).[7]
First children arrived in 1892, and the couple went on to have five children in all, plus one adoption:
At some moment prior to 1900, the family had moved to Conventry, Vermont, where Edgar, his wife and three first children were listed on the 1900 Census.[12] By 1911, the family was back living in Potton, with all five children except the last still to come.[13] Regarding that last child, she was born Gertrude Ruth Page and was adopted officially 1914:
By 1920, the family had moved to Montgomery, Vermont, where Edgar and Aurilla were living with three of their daughters still at home.[15] Edgar's mother was also living with them for a time, as it was at their home in Montgomery where she passed away in 1925:
By 1930, those three daughters were still with them, with daughter Blanche joined by her husband Carl Geraw and their two children.[17]
Edgar's wife passed away in St, Albans Hospital, on 17 Feb. 1933.[18] In his later days, being a widower, Edgar chose to live for a time with his nephew, the Doncaster's, in Derby, Vermont.[19]
Edgar passed away in Montgomery, Vermont in 1948, at the age of 84.[20] That Death Record declared he had been living in Montgomery for 29 years. He was interred in Montgomery, Vermont.[21]
