Biography

Charles was born in 1834. He was the oldest child of Nelson Aiken and Clarissa Bourne. The date of birth is in accordance with his death certificate, referenced below (i.e. age 20 in 1857). This is corroborated by the 1910 census referenced below, making a contradicting source the unlikely one i.e. an 1840 birth year per the 1900 census referenced below. His marriage certificate referenced below, at age 20, is also 2 years inconsistent.

Charles is mentioned in the diaries of Eliza Calkins White of Potton, as having visited their home on 3 April 1854[1]. Eliza Calkins White was the mother of Abel White.

On 10 June 1857, Charles married Catherine M. Kennedy in St. Armand, Quebec[2]. This record identifies Charles as a farmer, aged 20, of Potton, and Catherine "Canada" age 25 also of Potton. The presiding minister was Francis N. Jersey. It may have been one of the last acts officiated by Rev. Jersey at his St. Armand chuch before he moved to the Potton Baptist Church, of which Charles' father Nelson and brother Nathan had at times been members.

Charles and Catherine appear to have had one child, who was still living in 1900 (per the 1900 census referenced below), but has not been identified.

According to the 1900 Census (of Templeton, Massachusetts), Charles and Catherine had immigrated to the United States in 1860[3]. His brother Nathan and his family also moved to Templeton, but a few years late (in the 1870s). Charles' father was living with his brother Nathan in Templeton on the 1900 census.

In 1909, Charles lost his wife, and the 1910 census lists him living (age 74, widowed) with his brother Nathan in Templeton, Ma[4].

He passed away in Templeton in 1915[5] and was interred there, beside his wife.[6]
