Research Notes

From Pam Wilson's page on Clement Aldridge:

Notes for SUSAN CROMPTON BOSWELL:
Teri Allred [in her Winter 1994 "Aldridge and Allred of the South" newsletter] cites a letter written by Sylvia M. Allred of W. Jordan, Utah, to John Lisk in 1976:
"In her second letter, she is discussing Susan BOSWELL who married Clement ALDRED/ALDRIDGE 2 Jul 1626. She states that after Susan Boswell's name in the marriage record to Clement, it definitely states "widow." On 24 june 1612, an Edmond BOSWELL married Susan CROMPTON. If that is the case and this is confirmed, the maiden name of Clement ALDRIDGE's wife would be CROMPTON instead of Boswell."
  • Susan Boswell, July 2, 1626 in Worstead, Norfolk, England[5]
  • Susan Boswell, 12 JUL 1626, Worstead, Norfolk, England[2][4]

Parents

John and Agnes (married 9 FEB 1584, Worstead, Norfolk, England[2]) may not be Clement's parents. Although Clement's marriage is found in Worstead Parish register, his birth/baptism is not. From Pam's Geni entry:

This may have also been the case with Clement [not from Worstead], who is of the right age to have been John's son but for whom no birth record can be found in the Worstead Parish Register. He may have been John's nephew or other relative who came to Worstead to marry.

Pam also added the following note to the Geni entry for Clement:

"I have thoroughly searched the Worstead Parish Register with a fine-toothed comb to try to find a birth/baptism record for Clement from 1595-1610, but there is no sign of one. If he was the son of John and Agnes, he should have been baptized in Worstead along with their other children. This is puzzling to me and leads me to wonder if he was not their son but rather someone from another town who came to Worstead to marry (he married there in 1626). There are a couple of other Clement Aldrich's who could have been related--most notably one in North Walsham (neighboring village to Worstead) who was married to a Rose and had children named Clement, John and Elizabeth in the 1660's. There was also a Clement born 1571 in Kenton, Suffolk."

Pam Wilson

Aldridge researcher extraordinaire, Pam has posted her findings online for years, and her information is extensively quoted in this profile. Footnoted above is a reference to the image of Clement and Susan's marriage record. The image and post is here in FaceBook (but you need to be signed in to FB to see it). Her post, dated 22 January 2014:
"The last few days I've decided it's time to again tackle the big question of where the Northumberland County Virginia Arledge/Aldridge family came from. SO much bad information has been circulating out there in print and on the internet for so many years.
"So, the last few days, I've been immersed in the 16th century trying to find our Arledge (aka Aldridge/Aldrich) ancestors in Norfolk, England records. Last night, I discovered the Worstead Parish Register starting from 1558 online. I'm in history geek heaven! (Except, damn, it's hard to decipher this writing!)
"This is the record of the 1626 marriage of Clement Aldrich and Susan Boswell, widow. Performed by Rev. Henry Aldred, vicar of Worstead (not an ancestor, even though many have tried to claim him).
"Hours of poring over this and my head and vision are spinning. But I've found some good stuff to both support and cast doubt upon some earlier theories."

Clement married Susan. But... He may not be son of John & Agnes Rolfe. From Pam Wilson (on Geni page at http://www.geni.com/people/Clement-Aldridge-I/6000000001724840942 ):

From Pam Wilson, Curator, in January 2014:

image uploaded by Pam looks like they married the "second day of Julie" (not 12)
