John W. Allen was born about 1840 in North Carolina, United States.[1]
During the Civil War, he served as a Private, then Corporal, in Company G of the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, the first regiment in the United States made up entirely of enlisted men of color. Enlisted 12 May 1863 at the age of 23. He is described in his Compiled Military Service Record as being 5' 10" tall and having dark complexion, dark eyes, and black hair. His birthplace is recorded as North Carolina.[1]'
He was promoted to Corporal on 15 August 1864. Mustered out 20 August 1865 with his regiment.[1]
According to the history of the 54th Massachusetts, he enlisted from Logan County, Ohio, and was married and working as a laborer at the time of his enlistment.[2]
A woman named "Margaret" was attached as John's wife, based on a pension index.[3] However, that John W. Allen was a veteran of the 54th Ohio Infantry; he is not the same as the John W. Allen from the 54th Massachusetts.
To date, no pension record has been found for John W. Allen of the 54th Massachusetts.
