Biography

Thomas Allen, shipwright at Kittery, Maine m. Mary Couch in 1712 at Kittery. Mary couch was the daughter of Joseph Couch , son of William Couch from Cornwall, England and Joanna Deering, daughter of the first Roger Deering of Kittery. They had at least one child, known from Swans Island history who was Joanna Allen, wife of Job Bridges of Swans Island, maine.

From Stackpole: "thomas Allen, shipwright, married, 24 Aug. 1712, Mary, dau. of Joseph and Joanna (Deering) Couch and lived in Kittery Point. He may have married (2) Elizabeth Tucker, 30 Feb. 1723-4. He had children Furber, William and Hannah. See Probate Records, VII. 42. Furber Allen married Mary Ball, 13 Xov. 1736."

Interpretation. The Elizabeth Tucker is the daughter of Hugh Tucker by his first wife, although it is unclear which Thomas Allen Stackpole is referring to. As for the children, those are probably children with Mary Couch and the evidence is this:

  • Mary's father, Joseph Couch, survived Mary, and Thomas Allen got Mary's share. The probate settled in 1729 referred to Thomas Allen, as guardian of their (Thomas and Mary's) son. This may have been a Furber Allen b abt 1714 who married Mary Ball in 1736

The next question is the ancestry of Thomas Allen. He was probably not the son of Walter Allen b. 1643 of Berwick. He is not in Walter Allen's will. Thomas Allen did however purchase property from Walter Allen of Berwick. Walter Allen's daughter Abigail was married to this Stinson described in the passage below. .

"I Walter Allen of Berwick… Husbandman… for a valuable Consideration… paid by Thomas Allen of Kittery… Shipwright… do… sell… Ten Acres of a Grant which was formerly granted to Jonathan Stimson by the Town of Kittery May 10th 1703, the whole grant being fifty Acres and was… Signed over to the sd Walter Allen the 6th Day Novr 1713… this thirtieth Day of August… One thousand seven Hundred & Twenty four… Walter X Allens X marke Mary Allens X mark In Presence of Charles ffrost Jonathan Stimson his X Mark Benjamin Lebby”[23]"

Thomas Allen's brother-in-law, William Couch, was a shipwright in Newbury, Mass and in Kittery and married in Newbury, and other records indicate that Thomas Allen was from the Newbury Allen family, which is probably unrelated to the Berwick Allens.

The Allens of Newbury were the sons of John Allen of Newbury.

Joseph Allen. Son of John son of Walter. This profile is undeveloped

John Allen. Son of John, son of Walter. This profile is undeveloped.

Samuel Allen. Son of John, son of Walter. His children are listed and he had no son named Thomas.

Benjamin Allen. Son of John, son of Walter. Benjamin had a son named Thomas b. 1690 and d. Sudbury, Mass. Not the correct Thomas.

Thomas Allen. b 1666 Son of John, son of Walter. This profile is undeveloped.

The most likely candidates are Joseph, John or thomas.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Thomas by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Thomas:
