Biography

Born: Mary Jane Allen Baptized or Christened: Geraldine Used: Geraldine Mary Jane as name throughout her life.

Born: Mary Jane Allen Baptized: Geraldine Allen Used: Geraldine Mary Jane as her full name throughout her life. She married her childhood neighbor Milo "Mike" Poppenhagen and had three children. She married and divorced Earl E. Holcomb, married and was widowed by Rodney Lee Cody, and married and left a widower Akira Fukatsu.

Her obituary reads, "Geraldine Mary Jane Cody-Fukatsu, known as Gerry to her friends, passed away at her home in Appleton, Washington on March 14, 2017.

She was born on November 9, 1928 in Portland, Oregon to Catherine Lavinia Agatha (Grant) and William Lawrence Allen, Sr. During WWII she worked at Meier and Frank in Portland, Oregon, wrapping and shipping packages to soldiers overseas. She was a homemaker most of her life, also worked as a cook at a small Portland diner just after WWII, and returned to Meier and Frank as a retail clerk in the 1960s. She held retail jobs at Fred Meyer, Oak Grove, OR., and The Oregon City Outdoor Store in the 1970s. She worked as a nursing aide at Gladstone Convalescent Home in Gladstone, Oregon in the late 1960s and early 1970s; and on the chainsaw production line at Omark Industries in Portland, Oregon in the 1960s. She was no longer active, but was a member of the First Baptist Church in Portland, Oregon.

Gerry married Akira Fukatsu in Seattle, Washington on March 18, 2006. An avid reader, Gerry loved Agatha Christie mysteries, James Herriot's endearing animal tales, and 'The Cat Who…' mystery novels by Lilian Jackson Braun. She read an entire set of the Encyclopædia Britannica volumes A-Z in order to broaden her understanding of the world. She studied fine art by subscribing to the Metropolitan Seminars book series from the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. A stickler for proper pronunciation, mispronunciation of the word, nuclear, was an endless annoyance to her. She enjoyed trying new things and would immerse herself in a project until she mastered it. In this way she taught herself to can, sew, knit, hook rugs, embroider, and oil paint.

In the early 1990s, she learned how to operate a computer – with DOS - and spent several years doing genealogical research tracing her family lineage back to 13th Century Europe, a feat that gave her great joy, a sense of pride, and appreciation of belonging to a large historical family.

One of the greatest pleasures in her life were her dogs. She especially loved dachshunds and dachshund-mixed dogs. She missed having a dog as she grew older. She didn't care for cats, but not a person who could stand by while an animal was hungry or not cared for, she adopted several stray cats in her later years.

She was under the excellent, compassionate care of Providence Hospice – The Gorge, at the time of her death. She died at home attended by family. She is survived by Akira Fukatsu, loving husband and dear friend, Appleton, WA; Catherine Cordrey, daughter, White Salmon, WA; James Poppenhagen, son, Scappoose, OR; and David Poppenhagen, son, Wahkiacus, WA, 3 grandsons, 1 granddaughter, 3 great-granddaughters, and 2 great-grandsons. According to her wishes, her ashes will be scattered by her husband in a private ceremony.

Condolences may be sent to Akira Fukatsu, PO Box 26, Appleton, WA 98602." [1]
