Biography
Jack was born in 1894[1] when the family lived on Alexandra Road in Lowestoft, Suffolk, England. Thomas was a fishmonger.[2]
By 1901 the family lived at 16 Nelson Street; Thomas was a solicitor's managing clerk and could afford to pay a servant to perform domestic duties.[3] In 1911 the Allerton family lived at The Homestead, 14 Corton Road, Lowestoft, which had eight habitable rooms. Thomas was a notary public.[4]
By 1917 Jack had emigrated to Canada and was living in Rapid City, Manitoba. He underwent a medical examination on 1 Nov 1917 (where he gave his trade as "farmer"), and enlisted into the Canadian Expeditionary Force (the 1st Depot Battalion Manitoba Regiment) at Brandon, Manitoba, on 10 May 1918. He survived the war, and signed his discharge papers on 7 Jan 1919.[5]
