Biography

Emily was born in 1816 in Stowe, Vermont, and died in 1851, after moving from Ohio to Monmouth, Warren County, Illinois, and having two children with husband Charles Cumings, an abolitionist and Methodist Minister. They had been married in 1838 in Unionville, Union, Ohio, registered in nearby Ashtabula, Ohio[1] Both cities were active stops on the Underground Railroad, protecting escaped slaves from slavecatchers as they awaited their ships to freedom in Ontario on the far side of Lake Erie. After Emily's young death, Charles moved the family back to Ohio, and later remarried Rebecca Sullivan, their longtime nanny/ housekeeper/ maid, which was common practice at the time. The family occupied a farm in Lake County, Ohio, and Charles continued his ministry until it was affected by his failing eyesight, but he remained an active church leader for life.
