Biography

Magdalena was born at Brännegärde in Örsås parish, Sweden on 3 Oct 1829.[1] Her parents were Anders Ericsson and Anna Johansdotter.[1]

Född: Magdalena Andersdotter[1]
Husförhör: Brännegärde, Örsås (1830-1839)[2]

On 7 Mar 1853, she married Andreas Tobiasson of Tittebo Lillagården, in Örsås.[3]

Vigsel: Andreas Tobiasson and Malena Andersdotter[3]

Evidently, Magdalena was already quite far along in a pregnancy; their first child, Johan August, was born less than a month later.[4] The child died of whooping cough at just 6 months of age.[5]

Född: Johan August[4]
Död: Johan August[5]

Magdalena and Andreas had five more children together, all of whom lived to adulthood, married, and had children of their own.

Their children:

  1. Johan August (b. 1853, d. 1853)
  2. Amanda Josefina (b. 1855)
  3. Johan August (b. 1858)
  4. Matilda Charlotta (b. 1863)
  5. Carl Oscar (b. 1866)
  6. Hilda Christina (b. 1872)
Husförhör: Strömsholm (1873-1880)[6]

Magdalena's husband Andreas died of "lunginflammation" (pneumonia) on 4 Mar 1879.[7]

Emigration from Sweden

On 24 Jul 1891, at the age of 61, Magdalena and her youngest daughter, 19-year old Hilda, left the parish of Örsås destined for "Amerika".[8]. On 7 Aug 1891, they took the Wilson Line steamship "Ariosto" from Göteborg, Sweden to Kingston-upon-Hull on the eastern coast of England.[9] [10] The North Sea crossing took about 40-50 hours. A train met the travelers in Hull and took them west, through Leeds and Manchester to Liverpool on the west coast of England. There, they boarded the White Star Line's R.M.S. Teutonic, bound for New York City in the USA. Their listed their final destination as "Braddocks, Pa."[11] The pair arrived in New York on 19 Aug 1891.[11]

Life in America

Magdalena formally joined the congregation of Braddock's Bethel Lutheran Church on 4 Oct 1891.[12]

On 20 Nov 1906, Magdalena fell and broke her hip.[13]

On 3 Nov 1909, a family reunion took place in the home of her son John Holmgren in celebration of their matriarch who had marked her 80th birthday just one month before.[14]

Magdalena's 80th Birthday Celebration

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported on the occasion:

"A family reunion was held on Wednesday evening in honor of the 80th birthday of Mrs. Magdalena Holmgren, 11 Holland avenue, Braddock. Among the members of Mrs. Holmgren's family were her two sons, John Holmgren and Oscar Holmgren, both of Braddock, and two daughters, Mrs. Amanda Holmquist and Mrs. Johnson, wife of Councilman Claus A. Johnson of North Braddock. All the grandchildren of the aged guest of honor were present. The home was handsomely decorated in pink and white flowers and autumn leaves. Addresses of congratulation were made by the Rev. Luther Wilson, in temporary charge of the Bethel Lutheran church of Braddock, and by August Roy, a cousin of Mrs. John Holmgren. The members of the Holmgren family have all been residents of Braddock 30 years and over."[14]

Celebration of Braddock Woman's 80th Birthday[14]

In 1910, the US Census lists her at 508 Seddon Ave, Braddock, living in the home of daughter Hilda and son-in-law Claus Johnson.[15] According to that census, Magdalena couldn't speak English and was unable to read and write.[15]

Magdalena died on 26 Dec 1912 at 344 Copeland Ave, in the home of her daughter Amanda Holmquist.[16][17][18] Her cause of death is listed "hypostatic pneumonia".[16] She was 83 years old.[16]

She was buried 29 Dec 1912 in the Braddock Cemetery.[16][19] Her grave marker includes inscription "Farmor", a Swedish word for "paternal grandma".
