Magdalena's husband Andreas died of "lunginflammation" (pneumonia) on 4 Mar 1879.[7]

A train met the travelers in Hull and took them west, through Leeds and Manchester to Liverpool on the west coast of England. There, they boarded the White Star Line's R.M.S.
