Biography

Middy Archer (surname speculative) was born about 1709 in Virginia Colony, possibly in Henrico County[1]. She passed away about 1790 in Buckingham County, Virginia[2]. [3]. Mildred "Middy" (Archer) Chastain is shown on the Find A Grave Index and is a sponsored memorial.[4] Find-a-Grave states Middy was born in King William County, Virginia. This location is extremely unlikely given the distance of that county from Manakintown where Huguenots first settled. It's likely the original author meant King William Parish in Henrico County which served the Huguenots beginning in 1702.

The following note regarding the origins of Middy's name was posted on her FamilySearch.org profile[5]:

This name was given by the Huguenot Society to the late Forrest Fairs. "Chastain Kith and Kin," page 41. Note that Peter, Jr. had a child named Archer Chastain. Middy was thought to be a nickname for Mildred. (page 243).

Marriage and Children

Married about 1730 in Virginia[6][7][8] to Pierre Louis Chastain Jr (1707-abt.1774). The couple had nine children:

Witt-1888 19:49, 29 April 2021 (UTC): Madeline is not the daughter of William Witt. Find A Grave Memorial #70987974 states:

Middy is not daughter of William Witt and his wife (surname unknown). This was speculation based on Pierre Chastain being Executor for Wm. Witt's will, but no other evidence has been found to support this theory. Also the Pierre Chastain Family Association leaves Middy's surname as unknown.

Witt-3343 and Archer-496 appear to represent the same person because: Pierre Louis Chastain Jr. had only ONE wife - see the Comment on Witt-3343 that gives a source for why "Witt" was NOT his wife's last name at birth - all other Sources indicate it was "Archer". Please merge into Archer-496 therefore. Also note that she died in South Carolina, not Virginia - see Pierre Louis Chastain's profile for the 1790 US Census data on that.
