Henry Armstrong was born in the village of Bardney, Lincolnshire. In 1861 (census) aged 15 he is listed as a 'pupil teacher' (teaching assistant in training). At the time of his marriage to Anne Garnett however, Henry Armstrong was resident in Lincoln, where he is described on the marriage certificate as a 'clerk for a saw mill company'. By 1871 he had moved to London, estranged from his wife and was working as a 'clerk at steam wheel factory'. In the 1881 census Henry Armstrong seems to have moved to Windlesham, Surrey and is a 'licensed Victular', where he is living with another woman and has a young son.
