Biography

The wife of Nathaniel Aldridge was born before 1770, possibly in Virginia. She died after 1830 in Lawrence County, Alabama.

Research notes

There is serious doubt about the actual name of the wife of Nathaniel Aldridge Jr. There appears to be no actual documentation of her name anywhere. According to F. R. Aldridge in 1975, her maiden name was held by tradition to be Armstrong, but no documentation of this existed.[1] Identifying her as "Jane" appears to be based on a conflation between Nathaniel Aldridge Jr. with Benjamin Aldridge, who died in Lawrence County, Alabama, about 1826/27, and whose widow was named Jane.

The identification of her as "Jane Brandon Armstrong" appears to be based on (1) the presumption that the wife of Nathaniel Aldridge, already presumed to be named "Jane" and "Armstrong," was the daughter of James Armstrong (1736-1766), and the fact that James Armstrong already had a daughter named Jane who married a Brandon; (2) an incorrect identification with a "Jane Brandon Armstrong Steele", who appears to have been the actual daughter of James Armstrong, who died and was buried in 1826 in Owen County, Indiana.[2] This woman (1) was never married to an Aldridge; (2) was never in Lawrence County, Alabama, with Nathaniel Aldridge; (3) died before the wife of Nathaniel Aldridge, who was still alive in 1830 per the 1830 census.

The estate record of James Armstrong, to whom this supposed "Jane Armstrong" is connected, has no reference at all to Nathaniel Aldridge, and the daughter Jane to which it refers is clearly not the wife of Nathaniel Aldridge. —Richardson-19564 02:55, 9 December 2023 (UTC)
